THE LANCE VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 WEEK OF NOVEMBER 10, 2003 Yeung wins first collegiate tournament St Andrews men’s golf team finishes second in first annual St Andrews Invitational Peter Galan Asst. Editor The St Andrews men’s team earned their highest finish of the year, placing second in their home tournament, the St Andrews Invitational, on September 29-30. The “B” team also played for St Andrews, garnering a tie for third. There was much drama after 36 holes of play at the par-72 Deercroft Golf Club, because not only did St Andrews tie Queens for first place, meaning a one-hole playoff was in order, but Knights freshmen Sergej Dronov and Alvin Yeung were tied atop the individual leaderboard, again necessitating a one-hole playoff. The Knights as a team shot 300-317—617 over the 36 holes, leading after the first round with that 300, while Queens scored 306-311—617. Dronov held the lead after 18 holes with the only under-par round for the tour nament, a one under 71, and fol lowed it up with a 77 for a 4-over par 148, and Yeung was 73-75 for the same score. The format of the team playoff was the same as it was for the entire tournament, just chopped down to one hole: 5 golfers from each team play one hole and each team takes the lowest 4 scores out of those five; the lowest cumula tive team score wins the playoff. The Knights linksmen had the honor on the playoff hole, the 450- yard 18th at Deercroft, so they sent their top two golfers, Yeung and freshman Do Ha, who shot 73- 80—153, to the tee to start the playoff off. Both hit drives into the rough, while Queens sent three golfers to the tee, and subsequently sent three balls into the fairway. Ha made a stellar recovery to just short of the green in two while Yeung had to punch out to the mid dle of the fairway. Only one of Queens’ golfers put their second shots on the green. Ha failed to get down in two from his position, for a bogey, as he chipped onto the green and was unable to make his par putt. Yeung fared the same, putting his approach from 100 yards onto the green and two-put- ting. The golfers from the Royals’ first group made par, par and bogey, to essentially put the Knights down by two going into the final group. Sophomore Graham Bell, who posted scores of 76-83 for a 159, hit his play-off drive into a bush but was able to drop away from it, so he was hitting his second onto the green. He hit into a bunker, blasted out, and two-putted for a bogey. The fourth man for the linksters, junior Josh Boucher, hit his drive just through the fairway and put his approach on the green. Jon Williams, the only senior on the team, playing in his first tour nament of the year, hit a tremen dous drive that ended up only 100 yards from the green and then pro ceeded to stick it on the green. The first to tee of for Queens put his drive in the hazard, also requiring a drop and stroke penalty, laid up to 65 yards and stuck his approach to 8 feet, making the putt for bogey. However, the other Royal linksman nailed his drive, and pured his approach to just left of the cup. As it stood at that point. Queens was ahead by one, with two pars and two bogeys in the books compared to two bogeys for the Knights. So it was now up to Williams and Boucher. The Knights, to keep any hope of win ning the tournament alive, needed the second Royal to three putt as well as having both Williams and Boucher make par or better on the hole. As it turned out, the second Royal did not three-putt, and when both Boucher and Williams missed birdie putts, the Royals clinched the tournament. However, there was still another SEE GOLF PAGE 2 liEmglani a i:S0iw piiyer recievelReTflfi^ii"^^^^ jOtlBwiptenship match. What’s with the Attitude? An Editoral by Ryan Campbell SAU President For those of you who cut in lines in the cafeteria, this is a message for you. For those of you responsible for the growing litter problem on campus, this is a message for you. For those of you disrespecting your professors, this is a message for you. For those of you unnecessarily harassing the faculty and staff of our school and home, this is a mes sage for you. For those of you, who live, learn, work, and play on the grounds of St. Andrews Presbyterian College, this is a message for you! It has come to my attention, and to the attention of students, profes sors, and administration around St. Andrews, that there is a growing problem with rudeness, disrespect, pettiness, and unacceptable behav ior in the halls, dorms and public places throughout the campus. SPORTS PAGE 4&5 EDITORAL PAGE 2&3 OFF THE WALL PAGE 8 SIR LANCELOT PAGE 8 HORSE RELATED PAGE 7 Sure, it might seem like I’m biased or ill informed, but I’ve seen it all with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears. At first, I thought it was just the lit tle things that were irking me: the sleeping in class, the little cases of vandalism throughout the dorms, and the rolling of the eyes at authoritative figures. Yet one by one, the incidents became all too ordinary and finally, at the begin ning to the week, I decided it was time for the silence to stop. For the first issue addressed above, it’s a very simple solution - Wait in line! I don’t care what kind of hurry you’re in, or if you’re buddy is waiting for you ahead. We aren’t standing in a line for your enter tainment; you want the nuggets, get behind me. If I see anyone skipping the line, you will be hear ing my voice from this day forward. On the next note, whom reading this paper has ever heard of a trash- can? Very good, I thought so. If we all work together, we can get the papers and bottles and crap off the ground and into its proper place. If there isn’t one nearby, be strong and brave and carry it one hundred feet to the nearest one. Just an FYI, when you brag to your friends that you slept through class, skipped your test, and didn’t do your homework, that is a prime choice of ignorance. Why are you here? One day 1 was in math and figured out the approximate cost for every class we attend or don’t attend - between $55 - $75. This might be a pet peeve of mine, but falling asleep in front of your pro fessors is very rude and disrespect ful. It’s a wonder that so many pro fessors put with it in class. Drink some coffee, get more sleep, smack yourself, just do whatever it takes SEE ATTITTUDE PAGE2
