Week Of March 22, 2004 Knights Arena Winter Sports Wrap Up Peter Galan The Lance Men’s Basketball The Men’s Basketball team could not be described as anything less than underachieving. With a promising recruiting year that brought in 6 freshmen on the varsi ty team as well as 2 transfers who looked to contribute big minutes, hopes were high in the preseason. However, the team could not bring it together in the regular season, often looking discombobulated and playing too much of an individual game. The team fmished 6-22 over all (4-16 CVAC), losing in the first round of the CVAC playoffs to Erskine. The defining moments of the season came in the middle of January, when the team lost 3 close games in 7 days. The first game was a home game against Lees- McRae, when the Knights were down by as many as 25. They fought and clawed back into the game only to lose by 2 on a lay-up with 0.8 seconds left, to make the final score 79-77. Four days later the Knights traveled to Coker. The Knights led by as many as 17 points before losing the lead and heading to overtime, and then a second overtime, as they lost 92-85 in dou ble overtime. Finally, in this brutal 3-game stretch, 2nd-ranked and undefeated (at the time) Pfeiffer came to Laurinburg for a visit. This was possibly the most exciting game of the season. The Knights con trolled the tempo for most of the game, and led almost the whole way as a result. However, Pfeiffer came back from being down 74-68, using a 12-4 run, to take an 80-78 lead. The score stretched to 84-83 Pfeiffer with 9.4 seconds left. Then the real drama began, as junior Justice Graham nailed two free throws to make the score 85-84 Knights. Pfeiffer came back down the court and missed a shot, but the Knights couldn’t control the rebound. It was Falcon ball with just under 3 seconds left; unfortu nately for the Knights, there were 3 seconds left. The Falcons hit a lay up under the basket with 0.8 sec onds left and Graham’s last chance heave came up short, giving the game to Pfeiffer. It was that kind of season for the Men’s basketball pro gram; so close, yet so far. Next year looks brighter, as the team does not lose any staners (barring off-season transfers). Women’s Basketball The St Andrews Knights Women’s Basketball team was a pleasant surprise to the followers of the program. Success has not exact ly been a prominent aspect on Harris Court in the last handful of years; players and coaches have looked for silver linings in the dark clouds of seasons past. This year was different, however, as the team finished 12-17 overall, and 8-12 in the Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference. That may not seem like a monumental record, but it was a 7 game improvement over last year’s record (5-23), the most wins the team has garnered in Division II play (there was a team that had more wins when playing Division III and NAIA), and the team quali fied for the CVAC tournament, securing a home game in the first round. It was a great building sea son, as the team played as a team, with 9 players scoring more than 5 points per game. “Having a team effort instead of one or two star players made it difficult for other teams to prepare to play us,” says head coach William Carter. I asked Coach Carter what game he felt defined the season, and he said the January 26th game against Mt Olive was indicative of how the team played the whole year. Said Carter, “This was a close game the entire night with the lead changing hands several times in the last few min utes. With less than 5 seconds to go, one of our players (Quita Currie, senior) scored on a fast break layup to put us ahead for good. That win showed the team that our defense we had been prac ticing really could work and that we could beat the historically good teams in the conference.” Next year looks bright for the lady hoopsters as well, because the team brings back a bunch of starters and pri mary contributors, despite the loss of three seniors, 1000-point scorer Kebony Thompson, Quita Currie, and Amy Miller. Carter hopes “to add several talented players to the team through the recruiting process” as well. If you see any of the girls, congratulate them (belatedly) on a fantastic season!
