Banjo & I
(A riding experience!)

In the Fall of 2005,1 began riding in the Ride Like a Knight program here at St. Andrews. I had
never been on a horse before starting the program. Let me tell you, coming from my perspective, at first
it was scary. However, I had a great deal of encouragement from my instructor and volunteers. They
never doubted my ability to ride. As I was apprehensive, they slowly and clearly walked me through the
mounting process.
If you have never mounted a horse before, you can only imagine what was going through my mind
at the time. In spite of my concerns, my instructor and volunteers were right there telling me to
“breath.” Getting on the back of Banjo was an unaccustomed experience. My lower body was put to the
test when they place me on Banjo’s narrow back. My muscles were not used to being stretched in a
LONG time. My leg muscles were telling me to get off; although, my determination kept me on. Banjo
was wonderful; by shifting his weight he was able to balance himself and me too.
I felt on sensory overload and it was almost too much to take in. While Banjo was walking me
around the ring, my legs were trying to relax and I was enjoying scenery. About four times around the
ring and it was time to dismount. Dismounting was less strenuous than I anticipated. At the end of the
lesson, I was tired but I was highly enthusiastic about returning the following week
In conclusion, the therapeutic riding program here at St. Andrews has been an unforgettable
experience. Riding on Banjo, is becoming more then just a class to me; it has help me to discover a
piece of me that has been waiting to be revealed.
