Lance News “1 do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire Danielle Heider Editor in Chief Introducing the 2006-2007 Lance Editors Mathew Peak Editorial Editor I owe my passion of writing to my seventh grade English teacher, who influenced me to write and to read inspiring literature that has influenced cultures alike. Over the summer, I was given the opportunity to participate in two internships with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center. These internships allowed me to strengthen my writing skills by editing Strides, a quarterly magazine published by NARHA and distributed nationwide to partcipating therapeutic riding centers and certified instructors. Furthermore, I wrote press releases and articles for both NARHA and Riverwood Jake Nelson Student Life Editor (Picture Courtesy of Danielle Heider) Therapeutic Riding Center. Participating in these internships has allowed me to learn skills needed to run a successful publication I am enthusiastic about the sucess of The Lance and incorporating all aspects of the St. Andrews community. As a senior, I will be graduating in May with two degrees in English and Therapeutic Horsemanship. After graduation, I want to pursue graduate school; I plan on writing several books and advocating for individuals with disabilities. I began writing fiction when I discovered fantasy fiction in Robert Jordan’s Wheel Of Time series. Since then, I have written over fifteen short stories, two of which were published by Dragons, Knights and Angels ezine. Along side of fiction, I began writing political commentary and have had several articles published in The Lance. As a junior, I am majoring in Communications with a minor in Creative Writing. I hopes to write (Picture Courtesy of Kristina Good- and publish several novels, write screenplays and produce plays as well as pursue a career in video post-production. As a deeply religious person, I am interested in theological studies and cultural issues. In my lei sure time, I like to sit and chat with friends and play computer games. As a computer enthusiast, I do work study with Computer Services and occasionally I help my fellow students solve computer- related problems. Most of my computers have been custom built. I also like chess, though I can’t play to save my life. am Kristina Goodspeed Entertainment Editor 1 was born September 26, 1988 in Raleigh, North Carolina. My parents are both copy editors for The News & Observer in Raleigh. They taught me about how grammar and punctuation can often be blatantly misused in writing and I seem to have inherited their fervor for fixing it. I am currently a freshman at St Andrews, taking QUEST, Forensic Science, Writing Workshop, and Business and Economics. I came to St Andrews interested in science and was attracted by the “soccer-field- size science lab.” I can trace my ancestry to Scotiand, as my great-grandfather came to America as a boy in the early 20* century. In 1999,1 was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a neurological disability that makes my mind work differentiy. I’m Kristy Goodspeed, a freshman here at St. Andrews. I’m a North Carolina native; I consider Lumberton my hometown because my grandparents live there, and they raised me for the majority of my life, but I have been in the foster care system. It’s fair to say that I have family scattered across the state. ;) I’m an avid reader and writer, and I could not live without music - I love country, 80’s, and classic rock, but I listen to everything. I’m also a complete Internet junkie. And for anyone who knows me well can tell you I adore dogs! I have four at home: Tony, Daisy, Fatback, and DJ. I’ll be your Entertainment editor for The Lance. I’ve decided to take up Creative Writing as my major. I’ve also edited for a teen website, TeenFX. com, the past four years. I maintain the Health and Video Games sections, as well as all page images. I’ve also taken to proof-reading my roommate’s papers, if that counts for anything! I love editing, regardless of what it is. I’m an open person and enjoy getting to know people. If you have any questions or concerns - or if you’d just like to say (Picture Courtesy of Kristina Goodspeed) hi - please feel free to contact me at goodspeedkl@.sapc.edu. Until next issue, take care!
