Voltaire St. Andrews Choir Hosts the 2007 Spring Concert Andrew Maginn On Tuesday, April 18, 2007 there was the Spring Choir concert in Avinger Auditorium. This wonderful evening ofmusic featured the St. Andrews Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and several student solo performances with a guest appearance of the Scotland singers from Scotland High, and a surprise and very moving performance by Dr. McConnell. The Music that was preformed that evening was from several genres of music, as well as several periods of music Editor’s Note Dear St. Andrews Community, I want to take the time to extend my appreciation to everyone who has been supportive of The Lance throughout the year. Without the continued support and encourage ment The Lance would not have prospered this year. I am honored that I have been provided the op portunity to serve St. Andrews as the Editor-in-Chief of The Lance. At the beginning of the 2006- 2007 academic year, there were four staff members including my self. As of the April/May issue, there are five editors and over 25 staff writers and contribu tors with a diverse representation from faculty, staff and students. While The Lance staff has grown throughout the year, the creation of several significant pages has al lowed staff writers to write about diverse events that are occurring throughout the community. For instance, a few pages that were added throughout the year in clude: Knights Athletics, St. An drews Academics, St. Andrews in Service, Lance News, Student Life and Health and Wellness. The success of The Lance would not have been possible without the hard work from staff writers, editors. I would like to take the time to thank The Lance staff for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Each of you are truly unique writ ers and individuals and I wish all of you the best of luck in years to come. Finally, I would like to take the time to say thank you to my English professors and Communi cations for supporting me through out the year and providing wisdom when there were raised eye brows. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Good luck to everyone with finals and I hope everyone has a wonderfiil and safe summer. Sincerely, Danielle Heider ‘07 Si. Marti Newbold Named Dean of Students at St. Andrew Marti Newbold, St. Andrews Class of 1976, has been named dean of students at St. Andrews Presbyterian College starting July 1. Newbold currently serves as assistant dean of students at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. “Fm delighted that Marti answered ‘yes!’ so enthusiastically when we called her to return to St. Andrews,” said Paul Baldasare, president of the college. “Her time here as a student and her experience at Eckerd College will serve our students well. She understands, and believes passionately, in the kind of education offered at St. Andrews. “I’m particularly looking forward to her providing leadership in the area of service learning which will enrich our students’ educational experience and help them in their choice of graduate schools and careers beyond St. Andrews.” Newbold will report to Glenn Batten, vice president for enrollment and student services, who is also presently serving as the dean of students. “I have the greatest confidence in Marti’s ability to connect with students while encouraging their personal growth,” said Batten. “Her background in career services and academicadvisingwillbringadditional skill sets to our student body.” Newbold received her bachelor’s degree in English from St. Andrews and then went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. “The most compelling reason Fm coming back to St. Andrews is the appointment of Paul Baldasare as the eighth president of the college,” said Newbold. “I have known Paul since we were students and I believe that his vision and positive leadership are a perfect fit for our alma mater. “Likewise, my conversations with a number of faculty and staff have reassured me that St. Andrews is still a place where students are given an extraordinary interdisciplinary education that values exploration and innovation both inside and outside the classroom. I look forward to returning to this community and being able to give back to the college that gave me so much.” In addition to serving as a student affairs administrator at Eckerd for the past six years, Newbold has also been a member of the college’s faculty, serving as an adjunct professor in human development since 1993. She says Eckerd and St. Andrews are similar in their history and mission. “Through my role as assistant dean of students, I have learned a great deal about the rewards and challenges of dealing with student life in the 21"* century,” she said. “As dean of students at St. Andrews, I will be able to bring this experience to a great team already in place in the Oflfice of Student Affairs as well as collaborate with faculty and staff throughout the college to build on the rich legacy of student life at St. Andrews.” Like other St. Andrews graduates, Newbold remembers fondly her experience as an imdergraduate studying inLaurinburg. “In true St. Andrews fashion, I was encouraged to take classes outside my English major,” she remembered. “In Christianity and Cxilture, Bill Alexander taught me that ‘there’s nothing new under the sun.’ Neal Bushoven’s Marxism class profoundly changed the way 1 looked at social problems. In a philosophy class with Dick Prust, I was challenged to stretch beyond my intellectual comfort zone. “My English professors - including the late Carl Bennett - inspired me with their passion for literature. Former St. Andrews professors Whitney Jones and Doug Hix were especially supportive and caring to me as a young person. These are just a few of the many professors who touched my life.”
