LANCE
September 2007
Volume 47 Issue 1
Dear Readers,
This year at St... Andrews is going
to be an amazing year. There is a lot in
store for this semester. A new event like
Knightfest is going to be one of the
biggest highlights of the semester, other
returning events such as the Traveler
Series, Comedians, the bonfire, Airband
, and the all important Winter Formal.
These and many more are wonderful
events that bring the St... Andrews
community together, so I suggest you go
to at least to all of them.
There have been many repairs
going on around the school to make this
a better place for everyone. One of the
biggest repairs is that to the choral room
in the Vardell building. It has a new stage,
ceiling, floors, and chairs, everyone
should check it out. Another bit of
construction that is going on is out at th
e bam. There are new stalls being built
outside so that we can have more horses
for the growing equestrian program that
we have. The doors to the art rooms at
the bottom of the LA building have
beautiful paintings on them. All of these
changes are helping to make the campus
beautiful and enjoyable for everyone.
EDITOR’S NOTE
For returning students, 1 hope that this
year you will make more friends than ever, and
enjoy them plus what more this school has to
offer. If there was an event you did not go to
last year go to it this year. If there was a class
you did not take last year that you thought of
taking, take it this year. I am telling you this
as a senior, do not put off what you want to do,
or take, the time will pass you bye before you
know it.
For the freshman and transfer students,
I hope that you love this campus and school as
much as I do. Some advice I give to you is try
everything that the campus offers, be it, classes
or events try them, you can always drop the
class or leave the event if it is not to your lik
ing. Try your hardest in all your classes, and do
not slack off because it is your freshman year,
everything counts. Leam from your mistakes in
High School and do not make them in college.
The school newspaper The Lance has
been undergoing a rebuilding process since last
year. The former Editor-in-Chief did a wonder
ful job at restoring
this remarkable newspaper to its former glory.
It is my duty to keep this wonderful newspaper
going as strongly as it did last year. 1 am hop
ing to add more sections such as, a comic and
puzzle section, also an advice column.
The Lance is not only a newspaper but
it is a way for people of the St.. Andrews com
munity and outside the St.. Andrews community
to have an open dialogue with each other and
share events and news. If there is news in the
St.. Andrews community or surrounding com
munities that you would like to share and write
an article about feel firee to email me. The
Lance can only thrive with the help of you and
others who have a voice that wants to be heard.
I hope this semester goes well for everyone, and
it continues on to next semester.
Best Wishes to all,
Alicia Toke *
Just a reminder from the Dean of Stu
dents
Marti Newbold:
St.. Andrews prides itself on being a
welcoming community. However, this does not
prevent students from setting limits on who vis
its their rooms or suites, even if the visitors are
other St.. Andrews students. If you ask people
to leave your room and they refuse to go, please
call Campus Safety at Ext. 5112 for assistance
in escorting the unwanted visitors out of your
room or suite. If these visitors are guests of St..
Andrews students, then the officers will escort
them off campus if their student hosts can not
be found.
Please remember that you or other stu-
dentsshould never attempt to physically con-
firont someone to leave your room because this
type of action might provoke a physical con
frontation, which is a violation of St.. Andrews
policy (Saltire p. 56) If you have any questions
aboutthis or other residence life questions,
please contact the Office of Student Affairs,
Ext. 5145.
Changes in the Alcohol & Other Drugs
Policy
If you are of legal age to drink and
choose to consume alcohol, 1 recommend that
you review the updated Alcohol & Other Drugs
Policy in the new Saltire (pp. 50-55). Please
pay special attention to the section on the policy
against excessive intoxication under the head
ing “Drunk, Disruptive, or Disorderly Behav
ior.” Please note that Campus Safety officers.
Residence Directors, Resident Advisors, and
other campus officials have the right to ask you
to leave any campus event or building if you are
intoxicated and that you will be documented for
violating the policy on excessive intoxication.
Safety in Numbers
Please watch out for each other this weekend.
If you are worried about a friend who may have
had too much to drink, do not hesitate to call
your Resident Director or Campus Safety (Ext.
5112) for assistance. It is better for you to get
^ your friend medical assistance It is for you to
get your friend medical assistance if necessary
than for you to protect him or her from getting
in trouble! We need to watch out for each other
at St.. Andrews!
