Albert A. Rowe Inducted into SAPC Athletic Hall of Fame From: Staff Reports The fact that Albert A. Rowe played three sports at Presbyterian Junior College in the late 1940’s is not unusual. Many college athletes played multiple sports. But his accomplishment was that he excelled at all three - football, basketball, and baseball. For his athletic prowess and community service following college, Rowe will be inducted Friday night into the St. Andrews Ath letic Hall of Fame. His induction will come during the annual alumni awards banquet as a part of alumni weekend at St Andrews. More than 600 people are expected to visit during the weekend. In football, Rowe played left halfback in the single wing formation and was an excellent runner and passer He once ran 60 yards for a touchdown against Edwards Military Institute in 1948 In basketball, he was an excellent play- maker and ball handler, leading the team in assists both years. In baseball, he was a starting pitcher with an excellent fastball and curveball He had a great winning record and played other positions in the infield when not pitching He was also a talented hitter with a better than 300 batting average each year In addition to playing 3ports at PJC, Rowe was also a council member for the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, vice president of student government, and a member of the Block P Club. Following his time at PJC, he went on to letter in baseball for two years at Presbyterian College, graduating in 1951. He also coached the college’s jay vee basketball team for one year He served in the US Air Force for two years and was then honorably discharged He was employed by Westinghouse Credit Corporation for 34 years, retiring as the Senior Vice President in the Atlanta Region He then became vice president for Central Southern Bank in Milledgeville, Ga , for six years. Like many graduates of PJC, Flora Mac donald, and St. Andrews, Rowe also shows a strong community spirit For three years, he served on the board of directors for Milledgeville Country Club including the last year as president. He and his wife of 52 years, Eva Wilmore Rowe, have three children and six grandchildren. Men’s Lacrosse Advance in Tourny From; Staff Reports Junior Nate Hull made 13 saves in the second half keeping visiting No. 5 seed Lees- McRae College off the scoreboard in the final 30 minutes as No. 4 seed St. Andrews Presby terian College won its first round Conference Carolinas Men’s Lacrosse Tournament game, 10-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field. The Knights, who improved to 4-12 on the season, will face No. 1 seed and tourna ment host Limestone College in the conference semifinals on Friday morning at 11:00 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C. The Saints are also ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Bobcats are eliminated from the tourney with a 3-9 record. Hull picked up his third win of the season making 18 total saves on the garpe while limiting Lees-McRae to just four goals. Senior attack Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Knights offensively with his six-point performance. Junior attack John Holt (Montclair, Va.) added a season-high two goals in his first start of the season St. Andrews scored the first four goals of the game and led for the remainder of the game. A late give-away in the first quarter al lowed Lees-McRae to final score its first goal of the game as junior Kirk Rogers (Casselberry, Fla.) scored with 4.5 seconds left in the opening frame. The Bobcats kept the momentum head ing into the second quarter as sophomore Matt Markey (Burlington, N.C.) scored on an extra man opportunity just 12 seconds into the stanza. Sophomore Brandon Marks (Durham, N C.) netted another Bobcats goal just two minutes later to pull the visitors to within one, 4-3 Howell broke up the run by Lees- McRae with his third goal of the game for his fifth hat trick on the season. Junior Madison Thompson/Durham, N.C.) responded with a goal at the 5:45 mark in ^e second to'cut the deficit to one-tally. However, that was the last time the Bobcats found the back of the Knights net as Hull kept Lees-McRae scoreless for the last 35 minutes of game time Hull had six saves in the third and seven stops in the fourth while St An drews scored a pair of goals in each quarter to coast to the next round with a six-goal victory. SAPC held a slim 34-31 shot advantage while LMC grabbed a 41-40 ground ball edge. The Bobcats were l-for-4 on the EMO while the Knights were O-for-2. Lees-McRae won 9- of-16 face offs. Sophomore Kyle Camaggio (Pasadena, Md.) provided the Knights with one goal and one assist. A trio of freshman Knights netted one goal including Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va ), Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md ), and Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) Junior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) dished out two helpers for the Knights while classmate Marcus Kirby (Greensboro, N .C.), who won 6- of-11 face otTs, handed out one assist. Freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.) also had one assist Bobcats’ freshman goalie Andy Nesdill (Phoenix, Ariz.) made 11 saves including eight in the second half in the loss. Marks had a team- high two points with one goal and one assist. Five Knights named All-Conference for Men’s Lacrosse From: Staff Reports Freshman Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.) was named the 2008 Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and a second-team All- Conference honoree to highlight St. Andrews Presbyterian College award winners announced by the conference office on Monday. A total of five Knights were recognized by the league as All-Conference performers. Lewnes averaged 1.1 goals per game in his freshman season to be named the Confer ence Carolinas Freshman of the Year Lewnes ranks second at SAPC with 15 goals, 9 assists, and 24 points. Lewnes had two goals in five games in 2008 while also posting four point performances in a trio of games. Lewnes becomes the second Knight in three years to be named the Freshman of the Year (Nate Hull was the Deep South Confer ence Freshman of the Year in 2006). Senior attack Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) became a two-time All-Con- ference selection as the only Knight to make the first team All-Conference list. Howell led St. Andrews in every offensive category includ ing 34 goals, 17 assists, and 51 points. Howell ranks sixth in the conference with 2.27 goals per game and 3 .4 points per game. Howell also ranks ninth in the league with 1.13 assists/game. Howell scored in 15 of 16 games so far in 2008 including a six goal outburst against Seton Hill and an eight-point performance against Saint Michael’s. Junior middie Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) joins Lewnes on the All-Conference Second Team list. Loda earns his first All-Conference award after ranking third on the team with 14 goals, 8 assists, and 22 points. Loda had a quar tet of two goal games and had a season-high, four-point game against Saint Michael’s. Loda scored the game-winning goal against Pfeiffer Junior face off specialist Nathan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) was recognized on the All- Conference Honorable Mention list. Young took most of the Knights face offs throughout the season winning a remarkable 60.3-percent. Young led St. Andrews with 143 face off victo ries and 108 ground balls. Young had a sea son-high 22 face off wins and 17 ground balls against Belmont Abbey. Junior defender Parker Ferguson (Greensboro, N.C.) joined Young on the All- Conference Honorable Mention list. Ferguson started 12 games for the Knights on defense and ranks fourth on the team with 27 ground balls. Ferguson was St. Andrews most penalized player in 2008 because of his aggressive play on‘D’ Conference Carolinas All-Conference Men’s Lacrosse Teams were determined by vote from each Head Coach of participating insti tutions. Nominations are collected and then voted upon by ballot and tallied to determine First Team, Second Team, Honorable Mention Team, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year award winners. Awards will be presented at the Conference Tournament Championships hosted by Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. at this weekend’s conference championship. Quarterfinal games will be played Tuesday at higher seeded teams before semifinal games Friday and championship finals Sunday at Limestone.
