^THELANCE VOLUME MMX, ISSUE 1 December 2010 St. Andrews celebrates 20 years with Ecuador Alice V-Z Harrison Editor Fall semester 2010 marked the 20th annual exchange between St. Andrews and the University of Cuenca, Ecuador. Since the program began, more than 200 students between the two colleges have partici pated in this program, “(The partnership between) St. Andrews Presbyterian and the University of Cuenca, Ecuador began in 1991,” said Jeff Birdsong, assistant professor of Spanish. “Kate Hensley and Ion Youman, who have ties to Laurinburg, and serve as fiiculty in the Departamento de Ingles in Cuenca, have directed the program since the begin ning.” St. Andrews has seen a variety of staff and faculty members oversee the pro gram. Typically, one to four students from Ecuador visit during the fall semester at St. Andrews. For many years, St. Andrews students studied in Cuenca for the entire spring semester, but for the past few years, students have attended classes in Ecuador during summer semester. “Generally, Ecuadorian students are fully integrated with American students at St. Andrews,” said Birdsong. “They have American room mates and attend classes with American students.” The St. Andrews stu dents in Ecuador are not integrated with Ecuadorian students in classes. “St. Andrews students in Ecuador usually take lan guage classes specially adapt- Guess Who? Herrera. ed to their level,” said Birdsong. “Because they aren’t integrated with Ecuadorian students in class es, the Youman family and the University of Cuenca go to great efforts to integrate our students with Ecuadorian faculty, particu larly with Ecuadorian stu dents of English.” Birdsong provided the recent example of Taylor Nagle working with Ecuadorian English students who were doing a play dur ing the exchange program last year. “In addition, St. Andrews students are often (See Ecuador, Ps^e 7) Each issue of the Lance will contain a photo of a current employee from their youth.
