THE LANCE **Think Globally, Act Locally* VOLUME MMXI, ISSUE 1 June - August 2011 SAPC Students, Professors Travel to Vietnam By Alice V-Z Harrison ’12 Editor Have you ever been on vacation and thought to yourself, “If only I could get paid for doing this?” Have you ever enjoyed yourself so fully, that you didn’t even realize you were learning too? This was the case for some fortunate St. Andrews students and alumni who joined professors Larry Schulz and Howard Reichner, for an enriching trip to Vietnam over the summer. The trip lasted from May 13 to May 27, and earned the student participants two class credits. “We had a blast in Hanoi, which is the capital of Vietnam,” said Doug Holt ’11. “It was so much fiin experi encing the food, culture, and the reli gious practices taking place.” There was no skimping on quality of the accommodations, according to Schulz. “We did stay in a 5-star hotel in Hue, with pool and exercise room,” Schulz said. “The hotel in Hoi An was equally Guess Who? . . At Halong Bay, we stayed on a houseboat while cruising the bay and doing several hikes on the islands.” This experience was about more than having a good time. It was about learn ing and cultural exposure, plenty of which took place on the trip, as the par ticipants learned that even something as simple as getting from one place to another can differ according to loca tion. “Transportation was mainly by bus,” Schulz said. “We did take one overnight train and had a flight from Danang to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
