Page 4 June - August 2011 The Lance ACADEMICS Graduation Celebration for Senior Politics Majors By Alice V-Z Harrison ’12 Editor For those who don’t know, Professor of Politics and Asian Studies Larry Schulz likes social gatherings—proving that even introverts know how to have a good time. On Thursday, May 5, senior politics majors (students of POL 419: Senior Seminar in Politics) were cordially invited to be part of a farewell gathering at the Schulz home. And, of course, no gathering I of SAPC politics majors would be complete without professors Neal Bushoven and Howard Reichner. Students were treated to light refreshments, a beautiful atmosphere, and plenty of fun conversation. Surrounding us as we ate our straw berries and sipped our lemonade was the beautifiil herb garden that he tends to. Thanks fr^om us to you. Dr. Schulz! SEarCH comes to St. Andrews By Melissa C. Hopkins ’00 Director of Communications The Scotland Early College High School (SEarCH) Program began classes on the St. Andrews campus on August 9. This program is a collaboration between Scotland High School and Richmond Community College (RCC) that allows qualified students to com plete a high school diploma and associ ate’s degree in five years. Previously housed on the RCC cam pus in Hamlet, transportation costs resulted in an agreement among RCC, St. Andrews, the Scotland County Commissioners, and the Scotland County School System to relocate the program. There are approximately 170 students in the program and a stafi^ of 14. Office space has been dedicated in the James L. Morgan Liberal Arts Building A-hallway and Morgan Jones. The program strongly encourages that the SEarCH students interact with col lege students. Some of the program’s classes will include RCC students and will be taught by RCC faculty. St. Andrews students will also have the opportunity to interact with the SEarCH and RCC students as they move through the hallways and across campus. One of the hopes of the program is that some of the students will decide to complete a bachelor’s degree program at St. Andrews. As part of the agreement, a group of classrooms have been dedicated to SEarCH use between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. (See box at right) These dedicated spaces may be used for St. Andrews activities and classes after the SEarCH program com pletes the day.
