Page 6 September/October 2011 The Lance Scotland County Relay for Life 2011 On Friday, Sept. 23, a team from St. Andrews University joined with the community for the 2011 Scodand County Relay for Life event at Scotland High School’s Pate Stadium. The enthusiastic SAU Team succeeded in helping in the fight against cancer. One of the team leaders, Ren& Jones, shared the following facts and figures fi"om the event. 1. We succeeded in reaching our goal of raising $1000 for Scotland County Relay for Life & the American Cancer Society! 2. We had a wonderfiil turn out (mostly student athletes) for the Opening Ceremony! 3. We celebrated with two cancer survivors of our own, namely John Gay and Kristi Rogers! 4. We had a wonderful variety of over 50 items donated for our booth’s raffle! It was manned by some of our athletic teams, clubs, and staff members throughout the weekend. Thank you, Janet Schilling in the Bookstore for allowing the win ners to pick up their items in the store. 5- Drawing winners included: SAU students, feculty, alumni, supports, and other people fi'om the community. 6. We also had earrings to sell at our booth. Kristi Rogers made and sold 40 pairs of Cancer Awareness Ribbon earrings for the team! Kristi Rogers! She received monetary donations as well as 5 books from her church! Hardest Working Team-. Mens Wrestling who put sand and candles into over 1500 luminaries and then sent them out around the infield and in the stands Friday night. They also came out Saturday morning to clean them all up! (They would like to thank Betty Young who donated lunch firom her booth to feed these young men lunch on Saturday.) First Team to Sign-Up to Work- Women’s Soccer Team! Coach Naraine told me after last year’s event that they’d be there again this year and that they’d work the booth. He signed them up as soon as the first announcement was sent out this year. Best Dressed Team- Women’s Volleyball! Great tie-dyed shirts! These girls were out on the track convincing walkers to come to our booth. Early-Bird Team- Womens Basketball was out in fiill force on Saturday morning working our booth for two hours and they were delightfiil! (See RELAY, Page 7) “Think GlohaUy, Act Locally”
