Around The World
And Back
By Ellen Williams
Preparedness is the basis of
a seven-point program recom
mended by the National Security
Board to equip the United States
with adequate military defense
in order to ward off an atomic
attack. The highlights of the
new program are: making cities
less vulnerable; full use of scien
tific developments, and the back
ing up of military effort by indus
tries.
President-elect Eisenhower will
send Joh Foster Dulles and Har
old E. Stassen to Western Europe
at the end of January; The purpose
of this trip will be “to gather in
formation on political trends
there in relation to the United
States’ participation in NATO
a nd in economic assistance
abroad. This decision came as
the result of conference Ike had
with his cabinet. Let’s keep our
eyes on these two cabinet officials
as they represent us in Western
Europe.

The Calm Before The Storm
Governor William B. Um-
stead’s new office was suddenly
interrupted Sunday morning,
January 11, when he suffered a
mild heart attack. The governor
is resting at Watt’s hospital in
Raleigh and the reports from the
“doc” are good. The business of
Legislature and the State is con
tinuing with no hindrance. The
governor will probably be back
in the State House by the end of
the month.
Eisenhower’s Inaugu ration
commenced with the reception
for governors and other officials
and will come to a grand finale
tomorrow night with the Inaugur
al Ball. This is a big event for
the Ikes and also one for us be
cause it inaugurates a new era.

Row houses and white steps—
our first impression of Baltimore.
After such a long trip, it was
hard to belive that We were at
our destination. Breathing a sigh
of relief, we piled into a cab. To
the driver’s question, “Where
to?” we replied, “ M. S. College.”
“Stop kidding me. That’s a Ne
gro College. Where do you real
ly want to go?” We explained
that we w5re going to the USCC
Study Conference at the College,
where he then took us.
The United Student Christian
Council (USCC) is a national

also members of the World Stu

Marshall Tito will probably
be chosen as Yugoslavia’s first

constitution, the communist par

his country, and the forty-mem

Major John Eisenhower did

For a long time girls at Flora
Mcdonald have felt the need for
a place for meditation and pray
er. Knowing that prayer is the
great source of strength in a
Christian’s life, ihey have want
ed a quiet place set apart for
communion with God. Rich as
our fellowship with other Christ
ians may be,, there come times
when each of us wants to be alone
to think over problems arid to
draw strength from the reservoir
of the Holy Spirit.
The auditorium is not a suit
able place; moreover, the little
room in the balcony did not prove
successful as a prayer room;
Watkins Hall suffers from the
noise around it. Girls for many
years have dreamed of a place
apart, away from the bustle of
activity and noise. This dream
will soon come to be realized in
the prayer chapel to be erected
by the students this year on our
campus.
Undertaken as project of the
Christian Association, the work i
on the chapel will be done in
large part by the girls themselves

Preacher Recovering
Rapidly From Illness
“Preacher” Boyd left every
thing at Flora Mcdonald and
made a fast trip to the Scotland
County Memorial hospital in
as they don blue jeans on Satur- Laurinburg where she under
day afternoons this spring and
roll up their sleeves for work.
The cost of material will be
taken care of by money to be
raised by students among their
friends, Youth Fellowship groups
at home, etc. This project pro
mises to be great fun as we work
together for a building that will
mean much to the Spiritual de
velopment of many girls for
years to come.

PRAYER
Our Father in Heaven, dis
couragement presents itself on
every hand, and yet we know that
through Thee we have a peace
and calm which enables us to
do all things. Grant us that
peace, our Father, and may we
do all things to glorify Thy Name.
Amen.
went an operation on Tuesday,
January 13. News of Evelyn’s
departure came to us as quite a
blow, and we miss her around
the campus. The last report was
that she was doing very well, and
that she will soon return to the
fold.

Spiritual Enrichment
Week Planned In Feb.
In February we will have on
our campus for three days Dr.
John McMullen of Union Theo
logical Seminary, Richmond, Vir
ginia. Dr. McMullen is one of
the outstanding men of the Pres
byterian church, U. S. and we
feel honored to have him as our
speaker for Spring Spiritual
Enrichment Week, February 17-
19.
sophy at UNC; “ The Christian
Studeni; and the World Struggle”
led by George Forrell, associate
professor of Philosohy, Gustavus
Adolphus College, St. Peters,
Minn. Questions taken up in the
study of the Church were: Who
is a Christian student? and What
is the meaning of unity for the
Church? Three topics taken up
in the World Struggle group
were: Christian concept of his
tory; the responsibility of the
Christian in politics; causes for
the world disorder; communism;
what our generation can do for
Christ in the world struggle.
Another important phase of the
conference was the study of the
First Letter of John. We divid
ed into groups of ten which met
every night for two hours.
All work and no play? Never!
The time from 9:30 p. m. until
11:00 p. m. was set aside for re
creation—singing, folk dancing.
On New Year’s Eve we trudged
across the snow-covered campus
to the Christian Center. Each
delegate had been requested to
wear a hat of his own creation.
First prize was won by a funda
mentalist ‘bound by the Bible.”
The highlight of the week was
the Night Watch Service on New
Year’s Eve.
It was conducted by foreign
student, with special music by
the Conference Choir. The ser
mon on repentence was deliver
ed by a Yale Divinity student
from Norway, Scerre Smodahl.
A feeling of unity prevailed
throughout the Conference, even
with the wide and varied differ
ences of race and religion. Our
studies made us realize the res
ponsibility of the Christian Stu-
ent to study so as to be aware of
the world situation and our part
in it.
their mission is the farthest west
station in Brazil.
Mrs. Syderstricker, a bub
bling personality, made many of
us consider the innumerable op
portunities which we have around
us, and yet, we waste them so
flippantly. Her vesper talk was
of special interest to us, for she
told several, stories of persons
with whom she has worked. As
she told the stories, we felt that
we, too, had worked with and
known these people.
On Friday, January 10, Mrs.
Sydenstricker talked to the en
tire student body, faculty, and
staff at the daily Chapel service.
Here she told of some of the ob
stacles which confront the people
of Brazil as they grope for the
Truth. The people of America,
perhaps, present the most baf
fling problem of all, for the Bra
zilians believe this to be Chrit-
ian America and yet they read
endless accounts of crime and
unrest in these United States.
We owe a great deal to these
missionaries, and we owe a great
deal to ourselves, whom we are
cheating. «
The student Body enjoyed hav
ing Mrs. Sydenstricker on the
campus and extend to her best
wishes on her return to Brazil.
