Dome Service
Tops Activities
by Martha Kessler
The Christmas season at F. M. 0. has
more highlights than any other season,
and one of the most profitable and
•enjoyable is the Dome Service, which
calls to mind in a vivid manner the
origin of Christmas.
The Dome Service is. always held in
itbe rotunda at 8:00 on the night of
Ithe Christmas Banquet. The carols,
the scenery, the choir in the dome, the
star and — most of all — the story
itself give this service an awe and a
reverence truly worsihipful.
To effect such a service, much work
and preparation is necessary. With Mrs.
Elbert McPhaul as the ever reliable
and indispensable counselor, Betty
Barnes as capable director, and hard
working committee chairmen, this
year’s service is sure to be impressive.
Committee chairmen are:
Adeline Brady, director of the dome
choir; Frances King, properties; Gay
Mothershed, Sandra Sweet, costumes;
Frances Morton, lights; Sandra Abbott,
Linda Phillips, casting.
Since it is felt that the service is
more meaningful when viewed for the
first time, the cast is chosen fror-'
upper classmen, who having first felt
Ithe depth of its meaning can now share
Iheir blessing with others. This year’s
cast is:
Joseph, Jack Watson; Mary, Elise
Williams; Isaiah, Paul White; Shep
herds, Cynthia West, Alese Harrison,
Dewitt Dukes, Dot Hall; Watchman,
Becky Browning; Traveler, S a n d r r
Sweet; Wise Men, Shirley Evans, Hazel
McLean, Derice Weir; Angels, Nancy
Jo Thompson, Jean McRae, Ceil Heins,
Dina Brown, Frances Timberlake; Ga
briel, Barbara Wingate.
We predict that the Christmas story
as related in the dome service will be
an unforgetable experience for you.
Facts About Consolidated
Gollep Made Known
(From an exclusive interview with
Dr. Woodson)
On Thursday, Decemlber 12, 1957, the
board of trustees of the Consolidated
College met to consider definite policies
regarding the operation of Flora Mac
donald College until the opening of the
New Cons'oiidated College. It was de
cided that the present trustees of the
college will continue to serve in theix
present capacity. President Woodson
stressed the fact that all assets of the
college are to be kept intact, and that
constant attempts are being and will
be made to improve the academic work
lat Flora Macdonald.
The initial plans for actual consoli
dation took place when the Synod of
North Carolina met at Barium Springs,
N. C. in 1955. At this time »hey voted to
consolidate Flora Macdonald, Peace,
and Presbyterian Junior College into a
coeducational institution to be located
on the eastern seaboard. ITiis was decidi-
led after extensive two year study was
made of the educational institutions of
the Synod. Some of America’s imosit
outstanding educators participated in
this study which was financed by a
grant of $50,000.00 from the Ford
Foundation.
The thirty-two members of the board
of trustees for the new school consist
of eight members from the Flora Mac
donald board, eigiht from Peace, eight
from Presbyterian Junior College and
eight elected from the Synod at large.
An all-out campaign to secure five
million dollars in cash and pledges was
launched by these trustees. Laurinburg,
N. C., pledged three million dollars.

RUSSIA’S REACTION TO VANGUARD
EXPLOSION WAS ONE OF JESTING
A Red Army newspaper says
Uncle Sam thought of launching a
Sputnik in the sky. He announced it
to the world not 2 days but 2 years
in advance The boastful and rich uncle
called his Sputnik “Vanguard.” The
name was 'beautiful and quite chiic.
But it turned out to be psJiik.
It is plain to see that Russia is mak
ing the best of our unfortunate situa
tion.
U.S. CAJV TAKE FIRST BLOW. Ac
cording to all the things the U.S. stands
for we can never afford to be the ag^
gressor against Russia. The popular de
bate is “Can we afford to allow Russia
)io strike the first blow oif aggression?”
General Norstad, top allied commander;
says that even though Russia could
destroy many of our major cities within
35 minutes, we would still have enr
ough power to retaliate. What an en
couraging note.
PRESIDENT BACK AT WORK. The
President is back at work and recover
ing from his recent illness rapidly. He
is taking part in the NATO conference
in Paris.
In August, 1957, aided by a grant
from the fund for advancing education,
a group of educational leaders met on
the campus of the University of North
Carolina to draft an ideal curriculum for
la church related college. Competent
lauthorities have pronounced, the pro
posed curriculum as “unique and exten
sive.”
“The tentative target-date for the
opening of the consolidated college is
September, 1960,” stated Dr. Woodson.
