Pa^e 6 The Normal Magnet Our Debating Team The faculty and student body are very proud of their debating teams. Both teams were victorious in the contest on Friday evening, March 35, 1927. The question was Re solved: “That the United States should establish a Department of Education with a secretary in the President’s Cabint.” Miss Vivian Barrington and Mr. Raymond Morris supported the negative, Miss Pearl Davis and Mr. Edwin Green supported the affirmative. The nagative of State Normal defated the affirmative of Rich Square. Miss E. C. Harris and Rev. Doles, members of the faculty, accompanied them to Rich Square. The affirmative side represented by Green and Davis won the vic tory at home in spite of the hard struggle made by the Winton neg ative debaters. A large audience witnessed the debate in the State Normal audi torium. Many songs and yells were given for both teams. The judges were white citizens of the city, namely, Honorable J. B. Leigh, Rev. Scattergood and Mr. Herbert Peele, Editor of the Daily Advance of Elizabeth City, N. C. We are inde^ proud that our negative team won honors for us at Rich Square and our affirm ative team kept the victory at home. School is a place where children are working rather than listening, learning life by living life and un derstanding social institutions by actualy studying them as human ex^ eriences. Schools should provide attrac tive, pleasurable, and profitable work for children but through this work the children should ^ pre pared for the life that follows. What would happen if Mrs. Doles would fail to meet her class? What would happen if Winfred Shannon could get an N. P. C. pin to wear? W'hat would happen if a certain member of our faculty would wear creases in his trousers? W'hat would happen if our Edit- or-in-Ghief would stop objecting? What would happen if Theodosia Fagan could keep a girl for at least two weeks. Laugh and the class laughs with you, but you stay alone after school. Prof Brooks is still the speed king speaker of S.
