PAGE 4 STATE I’EACHERS COLLEGE NEWS LETTER FEBRUARY 1945 ALUMNI NEWS On Saturday, January 20, members of the Executive Committee of tlie State Teachers College Altimni held iheir annual mid-winter meeting in Club Room 1 of the Carver Homes, Portsmouth, Virginia, with Mrs. Mamie L. Turner presiding. Repre sentatives Irom Elizabeth City, .\hos- kie, Scotland Neck, Enfield, Ports mouth, and Warsaw entered into lengthy discussions of problems of \'ital interest to both Association and College. Alumni plans for Founder's Day and Alumni Day were perfected. I'he Committee sent to Mr. Afbert Hinton of Norfolk, Virginia, who was at that time sick, a telegram regretting his absence from the meeting. Im mediately following the business ses sion a very appetizing dinner was served in the Carver Homes Cafeteria. The members considered this, the first out-of-state meeting, of great signi ficance. Halifax County Alumni President I'rigg met with the mem bers of the Scotland Neck and Enfield District Altimni Lhiit on January 27 at the home of Mrs. Cleo Whitaker I'tu'ner near Scotland Neck. Members present were Misses Ethel Marrow, Minnie Collins, Florida Belle, Doris Whitaker, Annie L. Savage; Mes- dames Priscilla Bias, Mary Bailey Wilkins, Ava J. Wilson, Jessie W. Johnson, Earnestine E. Felton, Ro- lelia H. Herritage, Pearl H. Spauld ing, Cleo Whitaker Turner, Edythe M Shields; and Messrs. George Ellis, Fred P. Shields, William Stanton, Clarence Bailey, George Felton, John Spatdding. Other members are Miss Cora E. Jones, Mr. J. C. Bias, Mrs. Virgil Meekins, and Mrs. E. H. Pen- dergraph. The officers of the Chapter are: Mr. Fred P. Shields, Chairman; Mr. George Felton, Co-Chairniau; Miss Cora E. Jones, Secretary; Mrs. Ro- lelia H. 'Herritage, Ass't Secretary; and Mr. J. A. Spatdding, 'Freasurer. The Alumni unit is wide-awake and planning big things. President Trigg spoke on “I’he Activities of the .\lum- ni and All Future Plans for State Teachers College. Following the busuiess meeting, Mrs. Cleo Whitaker I’urner, Class of '43, served a delightful repast to all present. Mr. Taylor E. Jones, a member of the College start, accompanied Presi dent 1 rigg to the meeting. Senior Art Society News I hope you remember my write-up of the Senior Art Society Variety Show in the New's Letter lor January 1945, and I am stu'e you were sorry you missed it. But there may still be a cliance for yoti to see it because it has started its off-campus trips. The following list of dates, which is yet incomplete has been accepted: January 26—Roper High School Febrtiary 21—Edenton Hi School March 5—Hertford High School April 6—Sunbury High School On Jantiary 26, we filled otir first date at the J. J. Clemmons High School of Roper, North Carofina pre senting the show with a few changes. Replacements were made for persons absent for various reasons by Dorothye D. Plummer, Mary E. Skhnier, Katye B. Gray, William J. Adams and S. Edith Mackey. An addition to the show was made by Joseph L. Jordan who presented a monologue in which he portrayed “Alabamy Joe.” So be on the lookout for our show in your hometow'ii. I am sure you will enjoy it. • New Engineer Arrives The S. 1’. C. family welcomes Mr. and Mrs. A. R. McCollum and family to its campus. Mr. McCollum is the engineer. He holds a B. S. degree from Hampton Institute. Before coming to Elizabeth City, Mr. Mc Collum held positions of responsibil ity at Schofiel Normal and Industrial School, Aiken, S. C.; National Youth j Achiiinistration for Augusta, Ga.: i Florida A. and M. College, Tallahas see, Fla., and at the State Department of Education, Tallahassee, Fla. Mrs. McCollum, before coming to S. T. C., was Flome Economics Instructor at Florida A. and M. College, Tallahas see, Fla. She holds a B. S. degree from Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Ala., and a M. A. degree from Colum bia University, New York. • Senior Art Society Honored On January 1.5, following the ballet by the Strawbridge Dancers, the fac ulty and members oi the Senior Art Society were honored with a tea by President and Mrs. H. L. Trigg at their home. Music was furnished by Miss Lena L. Crandelf at the piano and Senior meml^ers of the mixed choir who sang songs from last year’s re pe to ire. It was a lo\ely affair and was thor oughly enjoyed by all. C)n Felirtiary 7th, members of the Senior Art Society were given light refresliments by one of their spon sors, Miss E\'elyn A. Johnson. After business transactions were completed, the members were invited to the music room where we listened to recordings of the opera.
