Alston The Team Without Togs Have you ever stopped to con sider the impossibility of attain ing success v:ithout the ‘collective backing’ tliaL comes from the peo ple behind the scene ? If you delve into the a.ccomplishments of our outstanding leaders, you will find that each one’s success came as the result of this hidden, yet very essential ajid powerful ‘backing.’ Try to imagine the late Roose velt without Eleanor, the cabinet members and the democratic par ty; John L. Lewis without the loy al support of the union members; and General Eisenhower without his general staff in planning stra tegy. Just as one might doubt the fate of these people, we doubt that our Pirates would have been able to realize their success with out the seal that came from ‘The Team Without Togs.’ We, the students of State Teach ers College, are honored to dedi cate this issue of the New Letter to our coaches, our nurse, and our cheerleaders who so whole heartedly and zealously sustained the team that wore the togs. Fisher WHAT A PAIR ! ! Our coaches, James “Fuzzy” Williams and James “Big Jim” Fisher arc dynamite! It was due to their efficiency that the Pir ates were able to realize their one desire — “Champs of E.I.A.C. for 1947.’’ Mr. James Williams, Head Coach and Chairman of the Phy sical Edacation Department, has worked diligently for two years with the Pirates. He is an alum nus of North Carolina College, Durham, North Carolina. From the University of Michigan he receiv ed the Master’s degree in Phy sical Education and Health. Aside i'roni teaching classes in Health and Physical Education, he is the sponsor of one of the most active clubs on the campus, The Imperial Nautilus. ■ Assistant Coach, James Fisher, is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University of Charlotte, North Carolina. During his college ca reer, he was an outstanding ath lete in football, basketball and track. In 1946 he was chosen all- C.I.A.A. halfback. Here at State he works primarily with ends and backs, and doubles as expert on sprains for the boys. Mr. Fisher teaches Health and Physical Edu cation and sponsors the Beta Al pha Club here on the campus. We take our hats off to you Coaches—full speed ahead for 1948. FOR SALE A car with piston rings Two rear tires and no front springs; Has no fenders, seat or tank. Burns lots of gas and is hard to crank. The carburetor’s busted in two, Engine missing, hit's on two Eleven years old, was twelve this winter; Has shock absorber and every thing. Radiator's busted: Sure does leak, Differentials are dry— You can hear them speak. Ten spokes missing. Front all bent; Tires blown out. Ain’t worth a cent. Tires all off. Has been run on the rim; To hold out much longer, Chances are slim. The name's' scratched off, I don’t knew what it’s called; But it will be a swell car if—■ It were overhauled. E. Moore
