Page Four STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE NEWS LETTER July, 1949 162 Students Get Bachelor Of Science Degree At the fifty-fifth Commence ment Exercises held in Moore Auditorium on the morning of May 24, the Elizabeth City State Tea chers College granted the degree of Bachelor of Science to 162 young men and women. Receiving high honor was Inez Elizabeth Manning; with iionor, Carol Angelette Williams, Vivian Ophelia Spence, Ava Jones Wilson. AKT CLASSES HOLD EXHIBITION The Art Classes have through the year attempted to make evi dent to the public a program of free expression and maturity bas ed on the recognition of individual differences. They have acquainted students w'ith various approaches to art so as to give to each one a chance to find at least one aspect of the subject that fits his person ality enough to mature into real growth in the plastic and vi.=i;al arts. To culminate the efforts exhib - tions on a competitive basis in fivo areas oi drawing were sponsored. Each student in th edrawing clas.s- es was required to choose the area that he desired and to produce creative drawings in that an-1 of competition. The purpose was stimulate in'.eresc in some area of drawing in which the student wish ed to work, to improve the atti tude of the student, and to check in general the work of the De partment. In the competition held on May 4, the works w^ere divided into fivo categories. At least six best works of the student for the year were chosen from each. Places were won by the following students: Ab stractions—Willie Lamb, Ida Gray, Lillian Norman, William Branch, and Nellie Drew; Landscapes- Mattie Cotton, Alberta Janies, Velma Williams, and Nellie Drew; Still Life—Vivian H. Williams, Margaret Harty, Mattie Welch, Helen Graham, Corena Williams, Rena Moore, Marion Murden; Figure Drawing—Marion Murden, Corena Williams, Annette Bag- gette, Mamie Crowell, Sterling Perry; Creative—Velma Williams; Poster Designs—Irene Chambliss, Clarine Boone, Corena Williams, Lois Rainey, Gwendolyn Johnson; Lilliam Norman, Eva M. Reddick, Ida Gray, and Sterling Perry. Also Industrial Arts Classes were given experiences with mas terpieces through the ages. They were called: “Do You Know the Picture ?” Excellent poster designs were done by Robert Poole. A variety of objects from ABC Books to Woodwork were exhibited by this group. Mr. S. A. Millings, head of the Art Department believes that the achievements have been highly commendable, for many student^iS have come to a realization of the various medias to which they be- lor.g and spend *rany of their leis^ ure hours creating.
