OF ’53 president announces PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT According to Dr. S. D. Williams, plans are being made to employ an architect who will design the senior Women s dorm, the faculty women’s liome and the front for the dining halL Other plans for permanent im provements include: (1) Lights for fie athletic field, (2) new roads and Walks, (3) a new roof for the admin istration building, (4) repainting of tie inside of the administration build- ®§) (5) redecoration of the audito- rimi. (6) the repairing of floors in ‘le library and Bias Hall and (7) the replacement of present dining hall ables with “formica” top tables. Dr- Williams also informed this repoiter that beginning this fall, a ‘ull time piano teacher would be add- ™ to the staff and that money had een allocated for furnishing the six liano practice rooms in the Fine Arts ^iJilding. NEW FEES FOR OUT OF STATE STUDENTS General Assem- Carolina, in making its appropriations 01 state institutions, raised fees for non orth Carolina resident ^ udents to $75 per quar ter or $225 per year. CHOIR HONORS FOUR STAFF MEMBERS The Elizabeth City State Teachers College Choir honored, during the commencement exercises, the four members of the college family who have, served the school for 20 years or more with gifts of sterling silver. The foiu: honored persons, whose combined years of service comes to nearly a century are President Sidney D. Williams, Mrs. Edna C. Michell, Mr. Aurelius P. Lester, and Miss Eve lyn A . Johnson. Dr. \\^illiams had served the school many years as dean before becoming president. He has been associated with many educational movements in North Carolina, founding at least two of them. Mrs. Mitchell, known to hundreds of graduates for her command of the English language and her abihty to teach it, is now liead of the EngHsh department. She has served the school in the past as librarian, direc tor of dramatics, and sponsor of the college student publication. Mr. Lester, registrar at State for many years, is now an instructor in tlie dei^artment of science. Miss Johnson, widely known direc tor of the choir, is also an instructor in music. The baccalaureate sermon was pre sented by the Rev. W. Tycer Nelson, chaplain, Maryland State College, Princess Anne, Maryland. Special mu sic was presented by the College Choir, under the direction of Miss E. A. Johnson. Processional and recessionijJ, music was presented by Mrs. E^j^eth Lambert Martin, organist. ^ Mr. William Muldrow, of the de partment of education, was the chief marshall. He was assisted by four marshals from the junior class. Principal speaker at the commence ment rites was Dr. Albert L. Turner, Dean, School of Law, North Caro lina College at Durham. Invocations were delivered by Rev. Marvin L. Williams, Pastor, Olive Branch Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, N. C. for the morning service and by Rev. J. R. R. McRay, Pastor, Corner Stone Baptist Church, Eliza beth City, N. C. for commencement. The degrees were conferred by Pres. S. D. Williams, who presided over both exercises. Mrs. Mayola T. Murrell, of the Brooklyn, New York Alumni Chapter, inducted the seniors into the Gene- eral Alumni Association. 32 TEACHERS ENROLLED IN DRIVING COURSE On Monday, June 15, thirty-two teachers representing various sections of North Carolina and public school systems enrolled in a teacher-prepa- ration comse in driver education of fered at Elizabeth City State Teach ers College.
