Ragged ball hand ling ,poor defensive work and below- par shooting caused the downfall of the Pirates in these games. Brilliant shooting by Randolph Too tle, who bagged 20 points, was not enough to pull the Pirates through against a Hampton Five which won 78-70, after trailing the Pirates by 14 points. Amos paved the way with ■32 points in their come-from-behind \ictory. “Black Jack” Defares and Sessoms were the big guns for the highly rank ed Winston-Salem Quintet in their 93-66 victory over Elizabeth City. Defares tossed in 21, while Sessoms hit for 29 points. Sessoms’ ball hawk ing stymied the Pirates’ offense. Mor gan connected for 16 and Fields 17, to lead the Pirates’ scoring. Playing a great floor game, St. Paul Institute handed the Elizabeth City Pirates their fifdi defeat 72-65. Scott, who got 22, and Mitchell with 21, led the victors’ scoring. Randolph Tootle registered -39 points for the losing Pirates. All the above games were played in the College Gyni at Elizabeth City. PUL4TES BREAK EVEN IN LAST TWO CONTESTS Upset Fayetteville 67-65; Lose 87-91 Thriller to Norfolk State Spartans Sophomores Samuel Billups, Richard Morgan, Robert Simmons, and Fresh man Henry Fields spearheaded at tack and lead the Elizabetli City Pir ates to a 67-65 victory over a strong Fayette\ille team. Trailing 34-27 at intermission, the victory-starved Pirates came back in the third quarter to take the lead. Fayetteville, putting on a full court press, cut the Pirates’ lead to two points. A desperate shot by Dobson missed as the buzzer sounded. Fields scored 17 points to lead all scorers. Billups registered 14 for Eliz- j abeth City and Morgan 10. | Morgan was top man for Fayette- i ville with 11 points. Overcoming a 52-49 half-time de ficiency, the Norfolk State Spartans defeated the State Teachers College Pirates 91-87 to take the undisputed possession in the EIAC. Jumping into an early 14-2 point lead, the Pirates looked like tiie\- might rout the visitors from Norfolk. Terrific shooting by Randolph Tootle and Ronnie Hubbard enabled the Pir ates to keep their lead until the fourtli quarter. Hurbert and Lee, main factors in Norfolk’s uphill battle, got 25 and 22 points respectively. Hurbert’s rebound ing could not be matched by any of the Pirates. PIRATES W.-VLLOP LIVINGSTONE 102-59 — Coach Empties Bench Coach Bobby \’aughn’s Pirates, fast- breaking throughout the contest, hit the century mark for the first time as they defeated Livingstone College 102 ■38 in the College Gym January 30. PIRATES .AFTER FOURTH STRAIGHT EIAC CHAMPIONSHIP AND TOURNAMENT The mighty Elizabeth City Pirates will be gunning for their fourth straight Eastern Intercollegiate Ath letic Conference Championship and also their fourth straight tournament. Under the guidance of Coach Vaughn the Pirates have dominated the Conference the past three years and are favorites to win the title tliis year. The only team in die conference that might upset the Pirates is the Norfolk State Spartans. Harry Freeman and Janies Greer, two great athletes, will be missed by the Pirates. Freeman, a great shooter, and Greer, a great rebounder, led the Pirates to V’ictory the past three sea sons. All around team strength makes the Elizabeth City Quintet favorites to crop their fourth E.I.A.C. title. Irvin Gordy and Henry Fields have proved adequate replacements for Greer at center, and a number of regulars paced by Randolph Tootle have shown they can shoot in the accurate Free man class. Let’s all get behind the Pirates and cheer them on to their fourth E.I.A.C. title. PIRATES DEFEAT SHAW BEARS IN THRILLER 95 - 94 The Elizabeth City Pirates had to overcome a ten-point deficiency to win 95-94 over the Shaw Bears in the College Gym at Elizabedi City on Wednesday, January 11. Taking the lead early in the first quarter, the Shaw quintet led by at least six points until the fourth quarter. Elizabeth City took the lead w'ith only five minutes remaining in the contest. With only forty-five seconds, Shaw regained by two points. A bas ket and a charity toss put the Pirates ahead to stay. This left the Pirates with a record of wins and two losses. Tliey have sixteen games remaining to play. ELIZABETH CITi’ TO TAKE ON 16 CAGE FOES Coach Bobby Vaughn’s Elizabeth City Pirates have 16 games on their 19.55-56 Basketball schedule. After impressively winning their first tliree tilts over St. Paul, Bowie Teachers College, and D. C. Teachers, the Pirates remained idle until after tlie holidays. Returning to the courts following the holidays, the Pirates dropped two tilts to a powerful Maryland State Quintet. However, one-point victories over Hampton and Shaw gave the Pir ates a record of five wins and tw'O losses. \\'ith twelve lettemien returning and a fine Freshman crop, the Pirates have proved to be a powerful team and are heavy favorites to win the EJAC, de spite a much-improved Norfolk State team. The remaining schedule is as fol lows: Home games: February 3, Voor- hees; February 10, Livingstone; Feb ruary 14, St. Augustine. Games away: February 4, Living stone; February 6, Winston-Salem; February 16, St. Augustine; February 17, Shaw University; February 18, Fayetteville; February' 20, \'oorhees. —Branch THE GLOBE OF SPORTS Boxing Rocky Marciano was crowned as “The Fighter of the Year” for the third time. Second — Ray Robinson, Middle- Weight. Third — Carmen Basilio, W^elter- \\'eight. Fourth — Archie Moore, Liglit- Heavy-W’eight. Fifth — Floyd Patterson. Sixth — W^allace Bud Smith, Light- \\'eight. “Rounder of the Year” goes to Archie Moore for the first time. Baseball Series winner, Johnny Podus, is ex pected to be drafted into service. Don Newcomb has signed the ’56 contract with the Dodgers. SPORT HIGHLIGHTS OF 1955 1955 saw' Elizabeth City State Tea chers College win their third E.I.A.C. championship and also their third E.I.A.C. basketball tournament. Led by seniors Harry Freeman and James Greer, the Freshmen-laden Pirates Quintet won 17 and lost 8 in 1955. Three of their victories w'ere in the tournament. In intramural basketball the “Blues” of Landon Miales won the Round Robin League tilt with a perfect re cord of 8-0. John Miller’s Wildcats won the intramural basketball tourna ment. The year of ’55 saw the Pirates re sume baseball after dropping the sport in ’42. The Pirates posted a record of 7 wins and 2 defeats in football. Their three \ictories in conference marked the fourth year in which they have gone unbeaten. However, the three victories were not enough for the Pir ates to be eligible for the 1955 champ ionship. In four years of competition against much larger schools, the Elizabeth City State Teachers College Pirates under the guidance of Coach Bob W'hite, have won 27 games, tied 2, and lost only 6 in football, a record surpassed by only a few colleges and universities in our country. —Branch HAMPTON UPSETS PIRATES 75 - 70 Led by their big center Amos, Hampton overcome a fourteen-point Pirate lead in the fourth quarter and defeated the Pirates 75-70 in the Col lege Gym, Saturday night, January 14th, at Elizabeth City. Paced by Amos, Hampton jumped into an eight-point lead but was un able to hold it when their big center left the game in the second period. The brilliant shooting of Elizabeth City’s Randolph Tootle enabled the Pirates to take a 41-36 haft-time lead. The Pirates seemed to have had the game in command, but a rally by Hampton knotted the count with less than five minutes remaining in the game. One basket and three charity tosses gav'e the visitors from Hampton a five-point lead with less than a minute to play. High scorers in the thrilling contest were: Amos, who led all scorers, witli 32 points; and Tootle who had 20 points to lead Elizabeth City’s scoring.
