LOSING STREAK
Lose Important Conference Game
to Norfolk State
.■\fter winning five of their first
seven games, the Pirates from Eliz
abeth City tasted defeat in four of
their five contests. Ragged ball hand
ling ,poor defensive work and below-
par shooting caused the downfall of
the Pirates in these games.
Brilliant shooting by Randolph Too
tle, who bagged 20 points, was not
enough to pull the Pirates through
against a Hampton Five which won
78-70, after trailing the Pirates by 14
points. Amos paved the way with
■32 points in their come-from-behind
\ictory.
“Black Jack” Defares and Sessoms
were the big guns for the highly rank
ed Winston-Salem Quintet in their
93-66 victory over Elizabeth City.
Defares tossed in 21, while Sessoms
hit for 29 points. Sessoms’ ball hawk
ing stymied the Pirates’ offense. Mor
gan connected for 16 and Fields 17,
to lead the Pirates’ scoring.
Playing a great floor game, St.
Paul Institute handed the Elizabeth
City Pirates their fifdi defeat 72-65.
Scott, who got 22, and Mitchell with
21, led the victors’ scoring. Randolph
Tootle registered -39 points for the
losing Pirates.
All the above games were played in
the College Gyni at Elizabeth City.

Terrific shooting by Randolph Tootle
and Ronnie Hubbard enabled the Pir
ates to keep their lead until the fourtli
quarter.
Hurbert and Lee, main factors in
Norfolk’s uphill battle, got 25 and 22
points respectively. Hurbert’s rebound

PIRATES .AFTER FOURTH
STRAIGHT EIAC CHAMPIONSHIP
AND TOURNAMENT
The mighty Elizabeth City Pirates
will be gunning for their fourth
straight Eastern Intercollegiate Ath
letic Conference Championship and
also their fourth straight tournament.
Under the guidance of Coach
Vaughn the Pirates have dominated
the Conference the past three years
and are favorites to win the title tliis
year. The only team in die conference
that might upset the Pirates is the
Norfolk State Spartans.
Harry Freeman and Janies Greer,
two great athletes, will be missed by
the Pirates. Freeman, a great shooter,
and Greer, a great rebounder, led the
Pirates to V’ictory the past three sea
sons.
All around team strength makes the
Elizabeth City Quintet favorites to
crop their fourth E.I.A.C. title. Irvin
Gordy and Henry Fields have proved
adequate replacements for Greer at
center, and a number of regulars
paced by Randolph Tootle have shown
they can shoot in the accurate Free
man class.
Let’s all get behind the Pirates and
cheer them on to their fourth E.I.A.C.
title.

75 - 70
Led by their big center Amos,
Hampton overcome a fourteen-point
Pirate lead in the fourth quarter and
defeated the Pirates 75-70 in the Col
lege Gym, Saturday night, January
14th, at Elizabeth City.

game in command, but a rally by

game. One basket and three charity
tosses gav'e the visitors from Hampton
