STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE NEWS LETTER May, 1957 SPORT TALK The Second Annual Track and Field Carnival will be held Saturday, May 18 on the College Athletic Field. The Carnival which is sponsored by the Athletic Department will have girls and boys participating in over fifteen events. The competition will be much keener this year and if the conditions are good there will be record breaking performances. Persons to be watched this year are Joe Buggs, and Ephriam Green in the dashes. Keep an eye on Curtis Wright and Joe Scott in the half-‘mile and mile. Favorite to run away with honors in the girl’s division is Vivian Eason. Possible winners in the field events are Henry Fields, Robert Moody, and Olando Hill. The Elizabeth City Pirates will play the Maryland State Hawks November 16 at Princess Anne Maryland. The game will be a big test for the Pirates of Coach William “Bucky” Harris who will be in his second year as head coach of the Pirates. The Hawks, kingpins of the CIAA in football for the past few years, have such outstanding stars as Johnny Sample NAIA, All American, and All Conference, Stan Jones. If the Pirates can stop these two, they can win. Sugar Ray Robinson made history again when he stopped Gene Fulmer in the fifth round of their scheduled 15 round middleweight championship fight. Robinson looked real good as he showed flashes of the “sugar” of old. His next goal is the welterweight title which is held by Carmer Basillo, a proud champion who thinks that he is superior to Fulmer. In Basillo, Robinson will be meeting to a fighter who can take tremendous punishment and come back with a savage covmter attack. Carmer has something that Fulmer lacks. That is knockout power in both hands. From this corner it looks like a great fight with Basillo winning by a TKO. SUPPORT THE BLOODMOBILE PIRATES BACKFIELD STRENGTH FOR 1957 SEASON IS OUTSTANDING PIRATES IN SPECUL EVENT AT JOURNAL AND GUIDE TRACK MEET Page Five INTRAMURAL ATHLETICS AND THE COLLEGE The fourth and final athletic event of the school year is the Annual Tract Meet. This is held about the second week in May and is the most popular sport of all. Some of the events in the meet are 60 yd. dash (boy and girl), 10 yd. dash (boys, broad jump, shot put, football throw, etc. At the end of all but one of the events the College family has a supper (picnic style on the athletic field). The final event of the meet is a softball game, generally between the Faculty of Norfolk State and Elizabeth City. Intramural Athletics, going hand in hand with other College programs, will develop well-rounded individ uals whom the college prefers as its future teachers. —John Richard Miller SCHOOL MASTERS (Continued from Page One) entertaining experiences for those ele mentary school children. Also there was an Art Exhibit in the Library, sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The drawings and designs were taken from several elementary schools of the North Eastern District and displayed by members of this Sorority. ! A package lunch which was served 1 was greatly enjoyed by all. The 1957 Pirates of Coach William Harris will have probably the best running backs in their football history. The 1957 Pirate backfield have speed power, and receptiveness. Coach Har ris will have enough depth to change an entire backfield with very little change in performance. The Mighty Joe Buggs that Coach Harris has is a fleetfooted back who is capable of going all the way on any play. In Richard Branch, he has a power runner who can run over and through would-be-tacklers. Ramon Rheinhart and Rodney Tucker are two veteran runners who always get the plenty of T.D.’s and yardage. A1 Wright, a little man with the drive of a giant, never gives up. Philip Smith’s jet-like bursts always get the yardage. Eugene Stalling’s decep tive running style can break a game wide open. Olando Hill is a Quarter back who can run and who loves to run. These boys are capable of stacking up with any backfield in the country. All ^he front wall has to do is give them some running room this year, and you will probably see some great runs by these boys. OPEN HOUSE OBSERVED The annual observance of Open House was held at Training School on May 5 when the Primary Glee Club, Grammar Glee Club, Rhythm Band and Majorettes presented their concert. Parents and friends were given the opportunity to visit classrooms and find out what the children had been doing during the year. The Elizabeth City Pirates got their first taste of intercollegiate track com petition Friday, May 3, when they participated against Virginia State Col lege in Medley relay. Joe Buggs ran the first leg of the medley for the Pirates. The distance was 440 yards. Next, there were two two-twenties. Ephriam Green ran the first, and Ramon Rheinhart the sec ond. The final leg was the half-mile which was run by Curtis Wright. Buggs gave the Pirates a five to seven-yard lead with his terrific speed. Then came the big surprise. Green, who was running against Moody, "lop Virginia State Sprinter, increased the lead to over ten yards in the first two-twendes. Rheinhart, who ran the second two-twenties, was overtaken and passed. Wright gave it all he had on the last leg which was the half- mile, as he tried to cut the terrific lead. The boys and their followers should not be disappointed for their showing. Though they lost, they showed up extremely well for the training they had. Congratulations!!! Graduating Senior Athletes The term “Athletics” includes the highly organized team sports, the com bative sports, such as boxing and wrestling, and die individual activities that are usually taught as part of the program of track and field athletics. Some of the more widely used team sports are baseball, softball, basket ball, volley ball, field hockey, soccer, speedball and football. At the end of the season the two top teams will play for championship. Secondly, we have the Annual In tramural Basketball program that is held during basketball season. This program operates almost the same as volley ball, except at the end of the season there is a tournament held. Thirdly, we have the Annual Intra mural Softball program that is held during baseball season. The softball program is operated on the same plan as the volleyball program. Both the boys and girls participate. This event is one of the more popular sports on the campus.
