Seniors Visit College
On Thursday, January 16, approx
imately eight-hundred high school
seniors were welcomed to the college.
A hearty greeting was extended by
President S. D. Williams during the
Assembly at 10 A.M. and selections
were rendered by the College Choir.
George Kitchen, Vice-President of
the Freshman Class delivered a mes
sage entitled, “What College Has to
Offer”. He emphasized the importance
of wanting to seek a college education
and the opportunities opened for col
lege graduates. He continued by say
ing in this day a college education is
stressed, and without it one will cer
tainly be handicapped, for it equips
one with the tools of language and of
thought. Thus it improves conditions
both intellectually and socially.
Afterward, congregational singing
under the direction of Miss E. A.
Johnson was enjoyed by all.
The seniors then toured the campus,
assisted by various guides. Some of
tlie places visited were; Administration
Building, Library, Infirmary, Canteen,
Laundry, and the Men and Women’s
Dormitories.
At the end of the tour visiting sen
iors were directed to the college Din
ing Hall where they were served a
very appetizing lunch.
This was followed by a short Band
Concert in the Gymnasium where tlie
guests remained to see the basketball
game between the S.T.C. Pirates and

Dr. Peter W. Moore, the founder
of our dear “Ole Alma Mater” was
born near Faison’s Depot in Duplin
County, June 24, 1858. He was the
eldest of five children born to Wed-
dick and Alecy Moore, who were
slaves.
Few records exist regarding Dr,
Moore’s youth, but the first school he
attended was probably estabhshed by
the Freedman’s Bureau. When he was
in his middle teens he attended a
school taught by Burke Marable, who
was probably the second strongest
factor in shaping his hfe.
After finishing public school, he
obtained a certificate to teach in a
one-teacher school in a district known
as Holly Grove.
It was not until the fall of 1880,
that Dr. Moore was enrolled at Shaw
University Here he received his AB
degree after twenty years of struggle.
He was a brilliant student, and science
and mathematics are said to have
been his favorite studies. Later, the
University conferred upon him the
M. A. and L. L. D. degrees in recog
nition of his contributions to educa
tion. He accredits his success to three
influential persons: his mother, who
gave him the incentive to be some
body; Burke Marable, who opened
die world of books to him, and his
educational father, Dr. Henry Martin
Tupper, who inspired him to be a
thorough teacher.
During some of his vacation terms
at Shaw, Dr. Moore taught at Clinton,
and after graduation he taught in tlie
schools of Bertie Coimty. From tliere
he went as assistant to the principal
of the State Normal School in Ply
mouth, N. C. where he remained four
years.
In 1891 the General Assembly
established the Elizabeth City State
Normal School, and Dr, Moore was
recommended and appointed by the
State Board of Education to take
charge of the opening of the school.
He came to Elizabeth City and took
up the task of establishing the school
for which the General Assembly had
appropriated nine hundred dollars.
And here in the proud Albemarle
section he began his life’s chief labor.
The school was located in two
other sites before its present one. Dr.
Moore went before the Assembly an
nually, making a report of the pro
gress of the school and disclosing its
needs. It was through him that an
industrial department was installed
along with the professional program.
There was much strenuous work
ahead, but Dr. Moore continued until
he secured living quarters for his
students. Along with his expanded
program, he placed more emphasis on
