ark you sure of YCUR CANDIDATES’ QUALIFICATIONS? ....
-by Ulysses Bell-
Campaign Week is now in progress. Many of the prophets are
pronisim' to deliver ’’their children from the bondage of inactiveness."
The candidates for the presidency of the Student Council have
given "soul-stirring speeches’’, have made it clear that they believe
that they can do an excellent job if only they had the votes needed
to win, and that if they are elected a "change is going to come."
Let’s pray that a change will come. Let’s hope that each one
of then will be more active on campus than they have been for the past
two years or more. Let’s hope that they work harder in their adminis
tration than they did in the Student Council administration of 1964-65*
Under ordinary conditions it seems that a person who is seeking
to get elected for a position as high as president or vice-president
would have worked his way up to this position in one way or another.
If one does a close evaluation of many of the candidates who are run
ning for offices, he would find that many of them have had no previous
experience in the Student Council. Consider the number of students
who actually knovr the candidates.
The question is, "How can a person sell himself as being better
qualified if he does not know the organizational structure of the
position in which he is seeking?"
Perhaps if he had participated wholeheartedly, given his support
in previous administrations, made suggestions vri^ere needed, and worked
faithfully with whomever was in office, then he would have some quali
fications to give.
Just what is considered "qualifications"? Is it being on the Dean
^ist? Is it being a member of a particular fraternity or sorority?
^oes it mean having one’s name listed in a number of activities of which
he is INACTIVELY a part?
The Dean’s List should not weigh heavily and neither should the
Honor Roll. Both can be gotten on in some questionable ways.
Some of the "biggest nuts" to meet on campus are those v^o
'determined to vote for their sorority sister or fraternity brother
