march, 1966 THE COMPASS PAGE THREE DEPARTMENTS ON PARADE Editor’s Note: The purpose of this section is to give the reader some insight on the progress that is be ing made in ten major depart ments. Two departments per edi tion will be featured, mostly with pictures telling the story. Growth In The Physical Education Department The Health and Physical Ed ucation -Department serves the college in many ways and has many facets of its program. The overall aim is ro provide exper iences in which all students will learn skills and knowledge in health, sports and exercises and to develop adequate fitness with sufficient poise and e- motional control to enable them to become perfective mem bers of society. The program is composed of five parts. The basic program of physical education for men and women which services all ot tne freshmen and sophjmore students of the- college. The teacher education program which has as its purp-jse the prepara tion of teachers of Health and Physical Education and Athletic Coaches for positions in the public schools of the country; the intramural program which provides the opportunity for vol untary and competitive recrea tional experiences in a wide variety of activities; and the athletic program which provides for the education of the physi cally excelerated and repre sents the epitome of physical education of students and serves as a focal point for the social and cultural development for all of the college family. The department is headed by Mr. Robert L. Vaughan. He is assisted by Mrs. Georgia L. Smith who is Assistant Profess or of Health, Mrs. Mollie Beas ley, Mr. Thomas Caldwell, Mr. John Turpin, Jr., Mr. Alvin Kel ley and Mrs. Valerie W. Vaugh an. The department began with an enrollment of 31 majors in 1961 and now has the third high est number of majors on the campus with 132 students and services over 600 students an nually in the many areas of the department. The department reg ularly sponsors activities inclu ding the modern dance group, which is a cultural group, drill team, cheerleaders, majorettes and the Physical Education Ma jors Club which has been artivr in promoting the intramural pro gram and other activities which have been associated with the cultural development of the stu dents. The students of the de partment may be found actively participating in organizations on the campus. The facilities of the depart ment include a gymnasium which is wholly inadequate but plans are in preparation for n ew fa cilities which will permit the department to serve twice as many students for a longer per iod. The department is overcrow ded and is called upon to help aljnost every area on the cam pus, The department has recent ly been engaged in research in which it endeavors to measure the health knowledge of the stu dents as compared to national norms in one phase and to com pare the physical fitness of our incoming freshmen with those of the nation. One member of the faculty. Dr. Maude Yancey is on leave doing research at Yale University related to men tal health problems. Laboratory experiences are provided for the students in the department in working with the organiza tion and administration of intra mural. This year the department will have approximately twenty four graduates of whom ample job opportunities are already ivailable. All students of last year’s graduating class who were members of the department were placed, including one who is working with AllbtateJnsur- ance Company. The department regularly places students in summer career jobs, working in camps, recreation facilities, throughout the nation. The pro grams of this department arc based upon scientific facts and in our endeavors there are in our program Correctives and Kinesiology which is designed to assist the students in making kinetic corrections. In recent years the overall approach to instruction has placed an accent on the build ing of concepts and apprecia tion to planned experiences that lead to the personal discovery of facts.
