PAGE SIX THE COMPASS APRIL-MAY, 1966 Social Sciences Department on Display The Department of Social Sciences acquaints students with social grouping and social forces which affect human be havior. To prepare students for better participation in world democracy, by learning aspects of the history of those societies which can help guide future ac tions, and to develop in the stu dent a spirit of inquiry which will help him think construc tively and critically, are other goals of the Department of So cial Sciences. The Department helps students to understand the cultural aspect and the role his society plays in shaping world affairs and to keep him ever mindful that the truth is not ab solute; therefore, he needs to rationalize and be openminded when new ideas are introduced. The Department also helps to arouse in the student a spirit of curiosity, concerning his role as a contributing student. The head of the department is Dr. B. V. Subbiah who has been with the Department for one year. Dr. Subbiah did re search at the Institute of Public Administration, New York, from 1956 to I960, along with his studies at New York University and he won high commendations from the Institute of Public Ad ministration. Mr. Melvin Murphy joined the faculty during the 1965 ' 66 school year. Mr. Charles Ramsey teaches a course in United States History. This is Mr. Ram sey’s first year at ECSC. Dr. Chi-Kao Wang is professor of Social Science. Mr. Timothy Wamack is also a member of the Social Sciences Department. He is Associate Professor of Geography and senior member of the Department in point of ser vice. Mr. Alphonso McCoy is Assistant Professor of History and Chairman of the Audiovisual Center. Mr. Chester Gregory, who is on leave, is Assistant Professor of History. Dr. Floyd House is Professor of Sociology. He joined the faculty this year. All of the graduates have secured positions in public schools. Because of the rapid expansion of more and more students with degrees in Social Science, the faculty has de cided to conduct a study to as certain the opinions of graduate schools and other agencies as to the quality and achievement of the Social Science majors of this college in their programs. It is the hope of the Social Sciences Department that after this research has been com pleted, it will be valuable in further attempts to improve the the quality of the Department’s majors. The results of this re search may become available beginning the first semester of the 1966-5.7 school year. The research is being conducted by Mr. Murphy. This research is being done because it has been found that the experience of learning through discovery enables the student to increase his intel lectual capacities; to shift from extrinsic to intrinsic rewards. The Department started in 1961-62 with 15 majors. It now has 148 Social Science Majors with approximately 16 students on the Honor Roll and 7 students on the Dean’s List. mm;. 1 DR. B. V.
