But I expect you to be the best with what y^^o u have,** stated Clarence Mitchell, Director, Washington Bureau of the NAACP, as he delivered the 75th Anniversary Convocation addres s. Not only was the college hon» ored to have this national figure present on such a noted occasion, but it was honored to have Mitch ell present because he is now considered **a part of the Col lege family.** His daughter-in- law is the granddaughter of John liias, second president of the in- You Have/^ Mitchell Says stitution, a fact which he and ECSC are proud of. The speaker emphasized his r-nnr^rp for education of youth. He declared, "we must stop short-changing our students.” He further stated that parents and the state of North Carolina must see that institutions of higher learning are not color blind. "A college should not exist unless it is good enough for all races, all classes.” "I hope,” he concluded, "that your contributions stu dents, (in society) will make it a brighter tomorrow than today.” The Honorable Clarence MItche Citations Presented at Celebration H. Johnson, Professor of Music Upon recommendation of the Seventy-fifth Annivt rsary Com mittee and assent by the College Administration, Elizabeth City State College awarded citations certifying achievement to several people. These citations were awarded to: Dr. Herman G. Cooke, a grad uate of Virginia State College and Professor of Biology, for research and international re cognition in Ecology and Zool ogy; McDonald Dixon, a graduate of UNCR and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, for abiding interest and conscientious work as Board Chairman; Evelyn A. Johnson, a graduate of Fisk Uni versity and professor of Music and Choir Director, for longevity of service and excellence of work at Elizabeth City State College. The graduates of Elizabeth City State College who received awards were: Isaac A. Battle, General Alumni Association, Gatesville, for contributions to the development of Alumni ac tivities and as an alumnus; Thomas S. Cooper, Retired Ed ucator, Elizabeth City, for ser vice to education in Northeastern North Carolina; and J. R. R. McRay, Minister, Elizabeth City, for longevity and consistency in support of college and alumni programs. The members of the Board of Trustees, John C. Bias, John W. Bond, Albert G. Bynum, Ro land L.Garrett,Clarence W.Griffin, A. Pilston Godwin, Jr., Clifford B. Jones, Sr., Fred P. Markham, 111, Louis T. Randolph, Mrs. Arthur Tripp and Martin L. Wil son received awards for their personal contributions in recent years and in appreciation for the work of all trustees of this Col lege during three quarters of a centuty.
