PAGE FOUR THE COMPASS OCTOBER, 1967 Vikings Second in CIAA With 5-1 Record Norfolk State Outlasted 14-12 Elizabeth City’s defensive line made a ma^ificeot goal line stand in the closing seconds to enable the Vikings to hand rival Norfolk State its first loss of the season. Recovering a fumble on the five yard tine with less than a minute remaining, Norfolk State seemed to have come from no where to steal the ball game which then read 14-12 Vikings. But the Viking front four of Cel- vin Webster, Al'vin'Lewis,George Mizzel and Shelton Bond refused to budge and time dripped away before a field goal could be at tempted. Elizabeth City State scored initially on a 47 yard drive in the second quarter behind the short passes of Johnny Walton. Walton sneaked over from die two yard line but the conversion try was unsuccessful. The Spartans came on to tie the score minutes later after a long pass interference call and a six yard scamper by quarterback Hobie Dorsey. They too missed the point after. The score was 6-6 at half time. Quickly the Vikings struck back in the third quarter. Walton passed repeatedly to end Ray mond Davis for first down yard age and halfback Grover Arm stead ran the Norfolk State line apart. He proceeded to dan 22 yards for the touchdown. The all vital conversion came on a 5 yard pass from Walton to Single ton. The Spartans scored abruptly on a 55 yard pass interception by James Minor however State could not come up with the needed points after. Offensively, Elizabeth City State was led by the passing of Johnny Walton who hit on 14 out of 24 passes. Five aerials went to Bavmoad Davis. Meanwhile on the ground, Grover Armstead was amazing as he galloped for 132 yards. Defensively, the Vikings line gave up a meager 16 yards to what was considered one of the better backfields in the con ference. Michael Watts came up with a crucial pass interception that ended one Spartan threat on the ten yard line. ECSC end, Raymond Davis (No. 80) and a host' of Spartan defenders grap ple for ball in what turned out to be an incompletion. Vikings Thunder Over Shaw University 62—22 Elizabeth City State quarter back Johnny Walton again dis played All-American creaentials completing 14 of 20 passes for 251 yards, and 5 touchdowns and conversions October 14 as the Vikings liierally skinned the Bears of Shaw University 6^-27. There was little the Vikings did not do in the course of the ball game except lose. From the game’s very outset, Elizabeth City State’s potent offense chas ed tht Bears defensive unit up and down the Held from end zone to endzone. The first of the 9 Viking touch downs of the afternoon was set up as linebacker Willie Stewart blocked a Shaw ppnt and recover ed on the Bear 2. yard line. The first play from scrimmage saw halfback Charles Single.oii dive into the endzone. Suigleton also caught a Walton pass for the two point conversion. A series of downs later saw the Vikings score hungry again. This time Walton threw 53 yards to his favorite target Henry Rhou- lac for the TD. The conversion failed. Little had changed as the second period rolled around. With the lall on their own 44, the Vikx..gs turned loose dynamic ha’fbark Grover Armstead on the Bears. Armstead crashed through for runs of 6, 12, and 33 yards be- for running mate Grady Sessoms charged over from the two. A pass from Walton to Rhoulac pro duced the conversion. Late in the first half the Vik ings marched to their fifth score before half-time. With the ball on the Shaw 25f Walton fired to Lincoln Bond for the touch down. At halftime the Vikings led 36-0. Shaw’s first touchdown was, set up by a blocked punt which the Bears recovered on the Vik ing 11. Back Roger Turner scor ed. The 2 point conversion came on a pass from quarterback Clar ence Patterson to end John Stennett. But soon the Vikings were up to their old tricks again. Alternate halfback William Powell flew 60 yards down the sideline to the Shaw 6 from where Armstead scored on the next play, Armstead also experienced his finest day of the season rushing for 173 yards. Powell ran for the con version. Next the Viking defense put scores on the score board. Line backer Billy Anderson, a deadly tackier, tackled a Shaw punter in the endzone for a safety and another two points. And by the fourth quarter, the Vikings con tinued to coast along with a 46-8 lead. Walton and Armstead continued to produce touchdowns in the final period. Armstead ran 20 yards and caught a Walton pass for an added 32 before Walton threw 11 yards to Lincoln Bond for another six points. Rhoulac caught his third conversion pass of the afternoon. Shaw went on to score twice. After recovering a fumble on the Elizabeth City 24, Patterson pas sed to end Allen Hepburn for the first and the last Shaw score came later on an 80 yard pass play to Wilburn Fields. Roger Stennet caught a pass for the 2 point conversion. With little over a minute re maining in the game, the Vikings produced their final six points. VIKINGS VS BRONCOS First Walton tossed 23 yards to Rhoulac and then threw 40 yards in the opposite direction to Single ton and the ninth TD. Singleton caught for the conversion and made it 62-22 and ended what had to be the most sensational game ever witnessed by ECSC enthusiasts. Vikings Roll Over Winston- Salem State 16>8 The Vikings of Elizabeth City State made it three in a row with a 16-8 verdict over Winston Sa lem State here September 30 be hind the running of backs Charles Singleton and Grady Sessoms who rushed for 102 and 97 yards respectively. The Vikings broke the ice to score midway in the first quartet when defensive back Ray Parker lanced in to block a Salem punt and tackle Herbie Bailey re covered for Elizabeth City on the Salem 24. After successive runs by Sessoms, quarterback Johnny Walton tossed 7 yards for the touchdown. Fullback John Brown powered his way three yards for the two point conversion. After a first half of gruelling defensive artistry and a flurry of penalties (the Vikings were Stall ed by 70 yards worth of infrac tions the first two quarters), Winston Salem’s break came. In the third period it was Win ston Salem’s turn to block a punt and race over on the Elizabeth City 13. Fullback Terry McNeil eventually tallied from the 3 and caught a pass from Foster Epps the next play for the bonus points The Vikings roared back and drove to the winning score at the opening of the last quarter 82 yards. Singleton scampered for three first downs and snagged a pass for another in the course ol the drive. Halfback Grover Arm stead finally burst 5 yards for the deciding points. Walton then pro ceeded to pass to Lincoln Bond for the points after. Winston Sa lem passed desperately for the remainder of the game to come back but to no avail. The Vikings were still undefeated.
