Ridley, President of Elizabeth City State College since 1958, has resigned his po sition effective after the end of the current school year, in a letter of resig nation to Mrj, McDonald Dixon, Chairman for the Board of Trustees, Dr. Ridley said, ‘‘In this 10th year of my work, I have reflected on it. it ha sheen challenging in a fertile field of great needo We have worked toward goals, many of which have been realized. However, the “massive load of work required taxes greatly the physical and emotional stamina.” He said, ‘i have reached the decision that it will be in my best interest to changc em ployment to a post with less demanding require ments. In his letter of resig nation Dr. Ridley review ed the fact that in the last decade the enroll ment at the College had tripled; approximately $4,000,000 in buildings are completed, under construction, or ready to begin; campus acreage has been increased 80%; employees increased from 69 to 175; doctor ates on the faculty in creased from 3 to 22; the single curriculum in Ele mentary Education has been expanded to 13 ma jors in ten departments; rank, tenure, and salary scales have been estab lished; the quality of stu dents more nearly ap proaches current national expectations; functioning Men's and Women's Gov ernment associations have been realized and students have been inte grated into the admini stration of the 'College through membership on committees; full mem bership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools was obtained in 1961, and graduates of the current year is 388% of that for 1958, increas ing from $495,000 to $1, 925,000. A long-range plan, in cluding a model, has been developed in stages to bring the institution to serve 4,000 students in 1985. In answer to a ques tion, the president stated that although there had been discussion about several, he would not wish to accept another college presidency, but would seek a position in higher education with far less administrative demands. He said that the joys and rewards of his work had been very satisfying, but that a position with less demands and stress is necessary to keep the good health which he has enjoyed, and to enjoy and spend time with his fam ily as he and they would (Continue on Page 4) Dr. Ridley resigns his ESCS post. ALPHA PRESIDENT SPEAKS i FOR PAN-HELLENIC DAY SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY CLASS VISITS WASHINGTON Dr. Lionel H. New- some, President of Al pha Phi Alpha Fraternity will be guest speaker for our annual Pan-Hellenic Day. This occasion is sponsored by the United Christian Religious Fel lowship, whose advisor is Dr. R. Irving Boone. Introducing the speak er will be Mr. Mack Thompson, president of Beta Zeta Chapter, in cluded in his introduc tion of Dr. Newsome will be some of these high lights. The guest speaker is a native of Wichita Falls, Texas and was reared in St. Louis, Mis souri. After receiving the B.A„ degree from Lin coln University in His tory with Cum Laude,Dr. Newsome completed work for the M.A. degree at the University of Mich igan in Sociology. Wash ington University award ed him thePh. D. degree in Sociology and Anthro pology. During the course of the last few years, dr. Newsome has endeavored to utilize his training in the following: Associate Professor, Social Sci ences, Southern univer sity, 1947-49; Head of the Department of Sociology and Pre-Social Work, Southern University, 1956-60; Professor of So ciology and Director of Woodrow Wilson General Honors at Morehouse College 1960-64.
