WELCH, '44 AND PRESIDENT RIDLEY DISCUSS PROGRAM m ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE ON FOUNDERS DAY On Sunday, February 25, Elizabeth City State College celebrated Founders Day commem orating the seventy-se venth anniversary of the college. Events of the day included a special lun cheon attended by decend- ants of the college found ers and other guests. A- mong guests attending the luncheon were Mr. Mc Donald Dixon, Chairman of the board of trustees of the college. Also pre sent were Dr. C. B. Jones, Sr., Mr. John Bias, and Mr. Wilson Martin, mem bers of the Board Df Trus tees. Representing t:he college alumni was Mrs. Elaine W. Perry '54, president of General A- lumni Association, Ral eigh. Following the luncheon, the annual pilgrimage to the grave sites of the col lege founders took place. Ceremonies at the grave sites included prayer by the Rev. RJ. Boone,col- lege minister, and hymns sung by the college choir directed by Miss Evelyn A. Johnson. Mrs. Louise G. Cox, ’41, and Mr. Ber nard L. Peterson repre senting the faculty, plac ed a wreath at the grave site of Hugh Cale, the Negro legislator who in troduced the Bill for the founding of the College. Next a wreath was placed at the grave site of Dr. Peter W. Moore, first president, by Mrs. Bes sie M. Wesley, his daugh ter, and Charles Free man representing the stu dent body. Mrs. Elizabeth B. Cofield, daughter of Dr. John H. Bias, second president of the College, accompanied by Leroy Douglas placed a wreath at Dr. Bias’ grave. Following the pilgrim age, Dr. Rizpah Jones Welch, ’44, Associate Professor of Special Ed ucation, Richmond Pro fessional Institute, de livered the Founders Day address, open house was held in ths New Class room Building and G. R. Little Memorial Library. A reception was held dur ing the open house hosted by President and Mrs. Walter N. Ridley. DR. WELCH SPEAKS TO AUDIENCE DR.
