Permit No. 5 ELIZABETH VOLUME APRIL. 1968 NUMBER 6 ''Youth And The Future” Meet President-Elect, Dr. Marion Thorpe In its March 19 meet ing, the Elizabeth City State College Board of Trustees elected Dr„ Marion Thorpe as the next president. His term is to start officially July 1, however, upon invitation he will meet the College family June 1. The youth ful 36 year old scholar is now Vice-President of Central State University in V.'ilberforce, Ohio. Dr. Thorpe brings with him one of the most color ful backgrounds an educa tor could claim. Last year during our Diamond Jubi lee Celebrations, he was a guest speaker repre senting the North Caro lina Board of Higher Edu cation. In 1966, Dr. Thorpe served Ix)th as Manpower Development Officer and leader of the Job Development I'ask Force for the United States Department of La bor. From December, 1965 through September, 1966, President-elect Thorpe was Director for Fields of the Neighbor hood Youth Corps. As an experienced teacher Dr. I'horpe was employed as Assistant In structor of I'ducational Psychology, Graduate Assistant for NDEA and Foundations of Education all atM ichigan State.Then from June, 1961 to April 1965, he held the posi tion of Assistant Profes sor and Associate Pro fessor of Psychology. Dr. Marion D. Thorpe was born in Durham where he later attended Hillside High School un til graduating in 1950. I'here upon graduation he entered North Carolina College but “Air Force Blue’ interrupted his college career from June, 1952 through June 1956. During his military ser vice, President - elect Thorpe was Military Drum Major, a most fla vorful toast to his var ied experiences. Return ing to North Carolina Col lege in June, 1956 he made his concentrations Psy chology and Education, thereby, in 1958 Dr. Thorpe graduated Cum Laude receiving both the B. A, and M. A. degrees in Psychology. In June 1961 he was awarded the Ph. D, in Administrative and F,ducation Services from Michigan State Un iversity. Dr. Thorpe con tinued his quest with post graduate study at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Execu Dr. Marlon Thorpe tive Seminar Center. North Carolina College utilized his talents and helped him bloom in many facets. For instance , he was a member and As sistant Director of the North Carolina College Band, the Echo’s manag ing editor, trainee to the “Eagle” football team, an intramural basketball player and in September of 1961 Chairman of the Interim Committee on Psychology. The next year. Dr, Thrope was ap pointed Dean of Students and served in the position until April, 1965. Among his academic memberships. Dr. Thorpe includes the American Personnel and Guidance Association, the North Carolina Psychological Association, Ad Hoc Ser vice , State Committee on Health Careers of the North Carolina League for Nursing and Phi Delta Kappa. His life has not gone without reward and orna ments. Among the honors received for his services to mankind. President - clect Thorpe includes Al pha Kappa Mu Honor So ciety, Psi Chi National Psychology Honorary So ciety, White House Fel lows, invited to partici pate in the regional finals in 1965, Honorary Gene ral, State of West Vir ginia, 1966; and Honor ary Citizen, Kentucky, 1966. GREEK NUS Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi an nounced their list of in ductees for the fall term. Eight young men were ini tiated into the Scroller’s Club of Kappa Alpha Psi. Their induction was held just before the Spring Break. The Pledgees were Billy Joe Reid, Grover Armstead, Oliver Har rison, Richard Francis, George Stanley, Willie Stewart, Hubert Moorer, and Charles Hicks. ECSC Professor Lectures In Moscow Russian scientists have invited an Elizabeth City State College Negro bi ology professor to lecture at the University of Mos cow August 9-11. The recipient is Dr. Herman G. Cooke, who holds degrees from Vir ginia State College, The University of Pennsyl vania, and the University of Wisconsin. Occasion for the Mos cow invitation is the meeting of the Interna tional Zoological and En tomological Symposium on Chironomid Research, with the famed Russian Scientist, Dr. N. J. Soko lova, presiding. Dr. Cooke first gained attention of world renown scholars in August, 1963, at the International Sym posium on Lim’nology at the University of Wiscon sin. There his original Chironomid research was recognized by Dr. Ernest Palmer, of Finland, and Dr.. Ernest Fittkau, of Germany, In August 1967, Doctors Palmer and Fittkau, re cognizing Dr. Cooke’s scholarly attainments and research, invited him to lecture at the Internation al Symposium of Ecolog ical and Zoological Re search in Helsinki, Fin land, While abroad Dr. Cooke was privileged to study four weeks at the famous Thienemann’s Research Center, Max - Planck - Institute for Hydrobiolo gy at Plon, Germany.Dur ing his research at Plon, he established a new spe cies of Chironomid, which was added to the world’s zoological nomenclature by the committee. Dr. Cooke’s new species bears the name Ababsem- yia cookie. In Finland, Dr. Cooke and other members of his scientific delegation were entertained in the Admin istration Building of the King’s Palace. Before re turning to America, he visited Oslo, Stockholm, Liege, Belgium, Copen hagen, Hamburg, Bre men, Luxenbourg, and Paris. Because Russian Scien tist Sokolova and his as sociates were favorably impressed by Dr. Cooke’s 1967 lectures and re- Dr. Herman Cooke search in Finland and Germany, they arranged for him no perform sim ilar services in Russia in 1968. After his visit to Rus sia, Dr. Cooke will con sider journeying to other countries whose scien tists, when he was abroad in 1967, asked him to so journ in their lands at his earliest convenience. Some scientists inviting Dr. Cooke to visit their research centers, includ ed Dr. J. Kugler, Tel- Aviv Unitersity, Israel; Dr. H. Hashimoto, Tokyo Kyoiku University, Japan; and Dr. F. Freeman, British Museum of Nat ural History, London. Within the last five years Dr. Cooke has published the following monographs: “The Im mature Tendipedidae (Chironomidae) Flarbor- ing Streams of Wiscon sin,” 1962; “The Ecol ogy and Life Histories of Tendipedidae (Chirono midae) Inhabiting Deep Lakes of Wisconsin,” 1964; “The Im mature Tendipedids of Subfamily Peloplines (Tanytarus) in the Vicinity of Madison, Wisconsin,” 1965; “Re currence of a Tail Mu tation in the Rat,” 1965; “Taxonomy of Immature Tendipedids of Germs Tanytarus of Wisconsin,” 1966; and “The Mining Tandipedids,” 1967. At its golden anniver sary December 11, 1966, Elizabeth City State Col lege, through its presi dent, Dr. Walter N.
