PAGE SIX PRESIDENT RIDLEY GIVES OFFICIAL RECOGNITION OF THE NEW QUEEN, MISS BESSIE CARR, 1965^6. PRESIDENT RIDLEY AND STUDENT COUNCIL PREXY, VERNON PERRY, GREET NEW STUDENT, ANGELICA MOLINA - 1965. DR. RIDLEY ACCEPTS DA VIS CUP. “First I believe in the triumph of truth. Truth will prevail. Second, I believe in the essent- tial and undeniable dignity of every human personolity. I believe that every person demands respect and regard because he is created in the image of his Maker; and he should have a chance to develop to the maximum of his capacity. Thirdly, I believe in democracy and demo cratic processes. These processes, based on our Judo-Christian ethic, have withstood and, I believe, will withstand, the tests of time and of trial and of oil tribulation. It may seem ot times as if what is right and what is good and what is true is covered by prejudice and dis- , criminations, and war and pestilence, but the history of mankind has shown us that in every n age the human race has been fre’er than in the age before. I believe that no force can turn * back the direction and tide of history. Fourth, I believe in human perfectability of that every person has the possibility of learning to do good. Often we are inclined to believe that there is no good in some people who, because of their reactions to immediate circumstances, moke wrong choices. But I believe in the educative process, and that if individuals are well taught in an environment which allows for human dignity and for tranquility of spirit, they can devel op into contributing members of society. Fifth, I believe that there is a power higher than we which power directs our ends, in ways not always clear to us, but I believe that God has pur poses which are being achieved through us, as imperfect as we are. On these beliefs I take my stand. In these beliefs my personality is anchored. With these beliefs I pledge to the Board of Trustees, to the students, to the faculty and staff, to the alumni, to the State of North Carolina and to generations of students at Elizabeth City State Teachers College, some of whom may not yet have seen the light of day, that I will do all that is within my power to promote the common .welfare of the people of the State of North Carolina, and to assure in this institution the kind of program in which we can all believe and which we can all support.” Excerpt from Dr. Ridley’s Inaugural Address April 26, 1959 DR.
