PAGE 6 THE COMPASS NOVEMBER 8. 1968 MEET THE VIKINGS Coach Tom Caldwell and taff greeted the 1968-69 edition of the E- lizabeth City State Col lege Vikings on August 25. Sixty-two candidates re ported. Coach Caldwell was also on hand to wel come the 25 returning let- termen. The nucleus of the team will come from these 25 players. Offensively the interior line will feature the blocking of Ernest “Ma- ^oo” Bell and Clarence ‘Scoop” Lawsom as guards. There are four Vikings battling for the two tackle spots. They are Sandsbury “Penguin” Harvey, Robert “Meat- head” Williams, Ronald Darden, and Charlie “Bunny Bear” Bell, Charlie is also slated to see action on the defense team. At center, Tony Russell will again holdup the middle of the line, Tony’s back-up is fresh man Jeryl Stewart, The receiving depart ment has undertaken a complete rebuilding pro gram, All three pass re ceivers from last years team have completed their college play. Shelton “Ready Red” and Tori- in “Coldsweat” Williams are the only returnees. Incidentally, both vete rans saw a great deal of action at the end posi tions. The sleeper of the pass receptors is Bowie “Tot” Totten. Tot was originally recruited as an offensive tackle. The coaching staff chang ed his position last spring after he completed the season as a basketball forward. Fill-ins include Maurice “Fish Net” Har- rod and Jacko “Super Ant” Cherry at flanker. Ronald Penny and Kenny Johnson will back up the tight end and split end. In order to have a suc cessful offense, a running game is a must. Probable starters will be John Brown and Grady “Ri- chochet” Sessoms. The CIAA leading rusher, Grover “Crazy” Arm stead, will again be out to retain his rushing ti tle. He rushed for 901 yards and was also sec ond in scoring. Added strength will come from Bill “Shag” Powell, Roy Parker, and highly re garded freshman, Rene Laughinghouse. The leadership of the offensive team rests in the capable hands of Lit tle All-American hopeful Johnny “Olive Oil” Wal ton, a senior quarterback and the CIAA top passer. He has been at the helm of the Viking attack for four years. He is truly a seasoned leader. John ny’s back up man is fresh man Roger “ Wisper-Jet” Hathaway. In order to be a com plete team, a .strong de fense is in de.Tiand too. The Viking defense has been noted for its fierce play against the run and the pass. The “Big D” is built around returning letter- men Ronald Leigh and Al vin "Spike” Lewis. Both play defensive end and tip the scales at better than 250 pounds. The de fensive tackles are en gaged in a dog-fight with 6’-9” and 270 pound Westley Boone having the inside edge. The remain ing candidates are Her bert Bailey, Jackie Ken nedy and Charlie Bell. Bell is determined to be starting at one of these positions. The Co-Captains for the Vikings this year are Junior guard Ernest “Magoo” Bell of Chesa peake, Virginia and Sen ior linebacker Willie “Stew” Stewart of Wash ington, D.C. Both gentle men have portrayed the leadership and desire to become good captains. Congratulations, fellows on your appointments. Finally, we have the great Viking staff of coa ches. Head Coach Tom Caldwell’s capable as sistants are Line Coach Roy “King” Knight, De fensive Backfield Coach Alvin Kelly, and Offen sive Backfield Coach Marion Mendenhal. So many times the coaching staff is overlooked, so let me take time to wish the very best of luck to the coming season, to both players and coaches. The second line of de fense is so important to the success of the de fense.. These linebackers must be fast enough to cover the offensive half backs on passes and strong enough to protect against the run. This could possibly be the main strength of the defense. Possible starters are Washing “Wash” John son and Willie “Stew” Stewart at corner line- . backers. Billy Anderson will again, handle middle- linebackers. Billy has the necessary size and intel ligence to become All- Conference at this posi tion. Back up men are Johnathan Brown, John Roberts, and JacWe Ken nedy. The secondary will fea ture the “Tidewater wrecking crew” of EC SC “Thom” Thompson and Waide Robinson at the corners. Also Darnell Moore and Mike Watts at the safeties. “Rabbit” Moore is the quarterback of the secondary. This will be the second year these guys will have play ed together. Each of them are familiar with each other’s moves in the last line of defense. They are out to improve last sea sons record of 7-2. The necessary material is here to go undefeated this season. The only thing left is to put the shoulder to the mill and start mov ing. DEAR ALUMNI, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! PLEASE SEND US NEWS! GO-GO TO VICTO WITH THE MIGHTY VIKINGS OF ECSC VIKINGS SKIN BEARS The Elizabeth City State College Vikings rowed ashore in a sea of mud and water to down Shaw University 20-0 on Saturday, October 19. A sparce crowd watch ed 19 fumbles smother the attack of both teams, as they battled to a score less deadlock through three periods. The running of Grady Sessoms, who dipped out 118 yards to batter the stubborn Bear line, and the punting of Lionel Miles kept Shaw in its own territory. Elizabeth City got the first break of the game late in the third quarter when linebacker, Jackie Kennedy hit Bear Louis Chambers causing a fum ble. Elijah Thompson recovered for the Vikings on the Elizabeth City 48. Sessoms and Brown moved the ball across midfield to the Shaw 48. Johnnie Walton hit Wade Robinson on a nine-yard pass. Walton faked a handoff to Grover Arm stead and spotted Torian Williams in the clear. The pass was good for 28 yards and the first Vi king touchdown. Walton tossed to John Brown for the extra point. Later in the period, Robinson took a Shaw punt and raced 33 yards to the Bear 42. Armstead went up the middle to the 30- Walton then hit Robinson with a 25-yard pass to the Shaw five. Brown then went in for the score. Shaw came back and went deep into Viking territory. But, their drive was stopped when Brown intercepted a pass and raced 85 yards to the Shaw 15. Shaw, however, rose to the occasion and stopped the Vikings on the nine. Elizabeth City got the ball right back though, on a Shaw fumble. Armstead then sliced in from the eight.
