Elizabeth City State University has been ap pointed as an institution al examiner for the Col lege Entrance Exam ination Board Institution al Admissions Testing Program (lATP) for the year July 1, 1969,through June 30, 1970. Scheduled to give its first examination under this program between June 15 - 30, Elizabeth City State University will have full responsibility for administering the test, securing test mater ials, and reporting re sults and operations to Educational Testing Ser vice. Dr. Ernest A. Finney, Director of Student Teaching and the Sum mer School, will serve as the Director of the lAT Program at Elizabeth City State University. The type of test to be admin istered under this pro gram is the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the score of which is a re quirement for admission to any college. Dr. Fin ney requested that guid- 1970 World Wide Tour Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, President, and Dr. Ernest A. Finney, Director of Student Teaching and Summer School at Eliza beth City State Univer sity were selected by the Comparative Education Society to participate in the 1970 world-wide edu cational tour. The So ciety, which sponsors seminars and field stu dies for educators to all parts of the world, is working closely with UN ESCO’s declaration of 1970 as International Ed ucation Year. Under the broad theme: “Educational Contracts Around The World, Drs. Thorpe and Finney are invited to join other edu cators and administra tors from colleges in the United States on the tour. Designed to further en courage comparative and international studies in education, the March 3- April 2 1970 tour will include visits to Switzer land, Russia, Turkey, Le banon, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan. Dr. Thorpe recently was officially installed as President of Elizabeth City State University,be- coming one of the young est presidents of a four- year college. He has a wide range of administra tive and educational ex periences. Currently he is also a member of HEW’s National Advisory Committee on Dyslexia and Related Reading Dis orders, and the ad hoc Selecting Committee of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation’s Martin Lu ther King Fellowship. Dr. Finney, who studies the relationship of eco nomics to education dur ing last summer’s Foun dation for Economics Ed ucation, Inc. SPELLER TO ATTEND USOE INSTITUTE Benjamin F. Speller, Jr., Instructor of Library Service and Catalogue in the G. R. Little Library at Elizabeth City State University has been se lected to participate in the USOE Institute at Case Western Reserved University, Cleveland, Ohio. The institute. Im plications of the New Technology for Teaching Library Science,” will be held from July 28 - Au gust 8. John T. Will iams delivered the key note address, during the American Legion’s Lin ton J. Sutton Post sports banquet. The banquet was given in honor of pro-signees Johnny B. Walton and Earl Bryant as a local token of appreciation for their excellent performance in collegiate football. Wal ton, former ball slinging quarterback at Elizabeth City State University and Bryant, the former ag gressive defensive half back at Norfolk State Col lege, have signed pro con tracts and will be depart ing soon for training. Williams, known in this area parting soon for training. Walton is bound for Los Angeles as the first Negro to sign an NFL contract as a quarter back, as the heavyvoice of the Lions, began writ ing sports 19 years ago while a student at P.W. Moore. He covered the game for the Virginia Un ion University Panthers from 1955-1957, and in termittently for Elizabeth City State University from 1958-1968. According to Harry Felton chairman of the banquet committee, rep resentatives from Nor folk State College and Elizabeth City State Uni versity were invited to at tend the banquet. Bryant is heading for Kansas City of the AFL. Both played hi^ school football at Elizabeth City’s P. W. Moore High School for former Coach Walter Hunter’s Lions.
