C DECEMBER, 1969 NUMBER 4 ECSU Charters Aware On Thursday, Oct. 31, 1969, the Advisory Coun cil chartered the student organization AWARE (achievement, wisdom, advancement, respect, and education). The foun dations for the organiza tion were drawn up by the concerned brothers and sisters on campus. The organization of AWARE was started to enlighten the general stu dent body toward their heritage, to create a sit uation of black awareness on campus, to help pre pare black students for the future leadership of black communities, and to instill black pride. The organization of AWARE will work in the com munity as well as on cam pus. Any brothers or sisters interested in becoming a member of AWARE should contact Freddie Jordan, Gary Lilley,Er- nestine White, David Watts, Eugene Smith, Richard Mey, Odell Cleveland, Marvin Mc Coy, Mervin Gilmore, Robert Wilkins, Samuel Thomas, Jimmy Copies, Willie Gilchist, or Leon ard Jarvis. Members of AWARE STUDENTS JOURNEYED TO GEORGIA Mr. James W. Sterling, one of the most amiable individuals on campus. Elizabeth City State University’s proposed community tutorial pro gram took another step towards continued de-^ velopment and expansion* when Javon Brothers and Jones were select ed. The all-expense-paid trip was made possible by the Association. The two senior art majors, more specifically, ob served the art area of Clark College’s tutorial program. According to Dr. Vin cent J. deGregorio.the EC SU Art Department has proposed a Community Art Education Enrich ment Program for stu dents of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County as a part of the University’s community action pro gram. “The visit to Clark College by Brothers and Jones will be most val uable to the proposed im plementation of the art tutorial program by the University,” Dr. deGre- gorio felt. THE SURPRISER Mr. James W. Sterling is the Elizabeth City State University Central Supply officer and Campus Book store manager. He is known here at ECSU as the “Surpriser”. Yoa ne ver know when he is com ing up with a surprise for anyone. He enjoys supplying elaborately decorated cakes for oc casions such as birthdays of office personnel. He has developed a strong relationship with most of the students here who are always welcomed to his home to enjoy an atmos phere of pleasantness while socializing. His main ambition is to see other people happy, especially those of the younger generation. Mr. Sterling was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, New York. He was drafted into the Army at an early age in 1943. He spent most of his years in the service. He retired from the Army with the rank of SFC, af ter 23 years of service. He holds the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with two clusters and combat infantry bad ges. He was a master jumper with over 300 jumps including a com bat jump with the 187th RCT early in 1951. Mr. Sterling has one daughter, Rosalind. He is a lover of various types of music, including elec tronic. He is known as a “Pinochle Expert”,here at the University and is seen quite often during his lunch hour in the rec reational center of the Student Union, excercis- ing his skill. (Continued on page 7) SREB SPONSORS CAREER SEMINAR Ella Bowe Miss Ella Bowe, sen ior Business Education major has recently re turned from a career seminar in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Southern Regional Educa tion Board. The seminar was designed to provide former interns with in formation on public ser vice positions, and to ex amine new careers. The seminar was the third such session attend ed by Miss Bowe. During the summer she attended a three day seminar at Eastern Carolina Uni versity and Nashville, Tennessee. This was in addition toher work,along with five other Elizabeth City State University students, on a Hunger and Malnutrition Study spon sored by the Economic Improvement Council. Miss Bowe Is a 1966 graduate of P.M. Moore High School, Elizabeth City; she holds member ship in several commun ity and university organ izations. She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Soror ity, Who’s Who Among Students In American Colleges and Universi ties, Thalia, UCRF, and she served as a Junior Counselor and Secretary to Student Government during the 1968-69 school year. Ella Is interested In teaching or work as a Personnel Specialist after graduation from ECSU and she is very Interested in those com munity and University experiences which will help to further qualify her for such careers.
