PAGE 8 THE COMPASS DECEMBER 12, 1969 WAIDE ROBINSON ROBINSON MAKES IT BIG By Walter Winborne Waide Robinson, for mer gridder and graduate of Elizabeth City State University, has helped bring the Hartford Knights of the Atlantic Coast Football League another division Cham pionship. Robbie, as he is call ed by his teammates, is a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, where he at tended Crestwood High School. After completion of high school he came to Elizabeth City State Uni versity. Here he played four years of college foot ball under the direction of Head Coach Tom Cald well. Waide was selected all CIAA cornerback his senior year here at Eliz abeth City, (1968-69).Af- ter college, he signed as a free agent with the San Diego Chargers of the American Football Lea gue. After his release from the Chargers, a friend in New Haven, Connecti cut told Waide about the Knights. He decided to try out for the Hartford Knights’ squad. And in doing so, he became a mainstay of the Knights’ secondary. The Hartford Knights are affiliated with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL. Only 22 years old, and ideally built for a cor nerback, at 5’11”, 190 pounds, Waide has great potential as AFL mater ial. At present, Waide lives in West Haven, Connecti cut and teaches Industrial arts in the New Haven school system. HONOR SOCIETY INITIATES NEW MEMBERS Kappa Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, National Honor Society in Educa tion on the campus of Elizabeth City State Uni versity, initiated five stu dents and one faculty member on Thursday evening, November 6, 1969. The student ini tiates were; Alfred L. Carter - Senior Social Science Major from Washington, D.C. with an honc’" point average of 3.36; Miss Bettie J, Jones - Junior Mathemat ics Major from Elizabeth City, N.C. - 3.38; Char les H. Moore - Junior So ciology Major from Ahos- kie, N.C. - 3.56; Miss Queen E. Moore -Junior Sociology Major from Washington, N.C. - 3.41; and Jerry M. Spence - Senior Industrial Arts Major from Chesapeake, Virginia - 3.35. Dr. Er nest A. Finney, Associate Professor of Education, Coordinator of Student Teaching and Director of Summer Sessons, was the faculty initiate - the first since the Chapter was in stalled in 1964. Preceding the initiation ceremony held in the Uni versity Student Union Building the students read and defended papers which they had written. Davis, Chairman of the Department of Music, serves as Counselor. MATMEN FACE TOUGH SCHEDULE With three returning CIAA Champions, Coach Roy “Bully ” Knight says “this will be the tough est schedule in the school’s history.” Eric Keys was the CIAA cham pion in the 137 pound weight division, Henry Myers, champ of the 145 pound weight division,and Jackie Kennedy was champ of the unlimited weight division. Some of the other outstanding Mat men are Jesse Carmon, senior; James Webb, sop homore, Samuel Thomas, sophomore, Odell Cleve land, sophomore, and Da vid Watts, a freshman. The Mat Men will travel to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., to participate in the NCC Wrestling Tourna ment. They will be the only black college there. The tournament will last from December 5-6. They will also be the host of the CIAA Wrestling Tour nament to be held March 6-7. FLAG FOOTBALL On Wednesday Novem ber 19, 1969, the Packer flag football team won the flag football champion ship. The Packers defeat ed the Butler Hall Raid ers by a score of 12-6. Before the championship round the Packers play ed the Roughnecks of But ler Hall and also beat them by a score of 38-0. By defeating the Raiders the Packers stop a three year winning streak of the Raiders. It is with pleasure that we Introduce the Packers team to you.
