PAGE 4 THE COMPASS MARCH 26. 1970 Campbell Nips E.C.S.U. Playing patiently and shrewdly, Campbell Camels edged the Vik ings to win the District 29 NAIA Championship and earn the right to play in the National Tourna ment in Kansas City. The Camels, enjoying their best session since the school became a four year institution, led by one point at intermis sion and by seven at one junction during the second half, but had to fight to the finish to pull out of the victory. Mike Gale led the attack in a losing cause for the Vikings with 19 points while Cordell Wise of Campbell also had 19 for the victors. Vikings Bowed To Winston Salem 86-83 VIKINGS HUMILIATE NORFOLK STATE 111-96 Vikings bowed to Win ston - Salem State 86-83 in the semi-finals of the 25th annual CIAA Tour nament. ECSU showed the Rams that even without the ser vice of the CIAA star Israel Oliver they would not roll over and die. The mighty Vikings wiped out eight points to take an 83-82 lead on a pressure packed field goal by *‘Philly Dog” (Mike Gale) with two minutes to play. However the Winston- Salem quint came back to grab the lead on a layup by Don Williams with 52 seconds to play. The Rams added two foul shots by David Spurrell with 25 seconds left to close out the scoring. It seemed as if old lady’s luck was against us this year. Because on the bench were three of Coach Vaughan’s starters - Nat Haywood, Hubert Moorer, and Israel Oliver. Hay wood because of injuries and Moore out because of fouls, Mike Gale lead the Vik ings in scoring with (28) Moorer (13), Custis (13) and Carmichael (11). Team-rebounding, long passing, and fancy dribb ling proved to be too much for the Spartans as the Vikings took full advant age of the situation to out class Norfolk State Coll ege, 111-96. Before a ca pacity crowd, the Vikings show ed the Spartans just how offensive and defensive basketball is played. One player in particular for the Vikings, Hubert Moore, put on a one-man show as he showed the Norfolk State Players and fans how to play “yoo- yoo ball”. He had the fans spell - bound with his fancy dribbling and passing. The Spartans went in to the contest ranked number two in the North ern Division of the CIAA, while the Vikings carried their first place ranking in Southern Division to battle. Both teams had identical 18-5 records, but Norfolk was seeking to make it two straight victories over the Vikings this year. The Vikings had trouble getting past the Spartans for eleven minutes to the first half. But two field goals by Chadwick and one each by Moorer and Gale broke open the Norfolk defense to give ECSU a 44-34 lead at 7:35. Seemingly the Spartans could not stand the pres sure, as the Vikings took a commanding 17 -point lead, 53-36, into inter mission. A steal by Olive and a lay-up by Chadiwck open ed the second half of act ion. Unable to hold the outside shooting of Moor er and Chadwick, and driving layups of Custis and Gale, opened up their, defense. Vikings Are Winners Redeemer Our Jesus set us free; He won the victory On yonder hill. The Cross on which He died. Our great emblem of pride. Is now cherished world wide. For lis God's will. Yes Jesus paiti the fee; His hlood saved you and me. long live his famel l et voices true and strong Ring out in joyous song. Like the great angel throng. All praise his Name! Our Jesus, it was He. Who braved old Calvary Through his pure love. He arose from the grave. Not like the common slave. But like the righteous brave From God above. By that time Oliver found working room un der the basket and around the center circle to score 28 of his 36 points in the second half. To save Norfolk the embarrass ment, the Viking toy ed with the Spartans, al lowing them to cut 15 points off the victory margin. Oliver paced the CIAA tournament bound Vikings with (36), Gale (21) Chad wick with a career high of (19), and Moorer (15). John McKinneys 27 points spearheaded Norfolk’s most feeble output. ^Illllllllllllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll| TEAM SCORES Their Scores 89 = 102 = 89 = 83 = 91 = 77 = 91 I 110 E 105 = 106 = 84 = 107 = 94 = 76 i 89 i 81 I 89 = 74 = 116 = 94 i 116 i 96 I ffilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllljlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllP “YES VIRGINIA, WE HAVE A V.
