PAGE 2...THE COMPASS...NOVEMBER, 1970 Greetings Greetings are extended to all our new and return ing students. 1 would like to offer best wishes as you begin to venture in a new and exciting school year. As Editor-in-Chief of the Compass and a member of the staff I would lilce to explain the reason for the Compass being belated. The reason is because of prevailing circumstances which the staff members had no control over. We will try with all diligence to keep you in formed of all recent e- vents whether they be on this campus or other campuses. Our goal is to strive for perfection; the only way this goal will be achieved is by the support you offer. Again I say welcome back and good luck I Editor-in-Chief Carolyn J. McKnight Right on brother! •••••• Carolyn McKnight, editor of THE COMPASS. Doing your own thing Are you really aware of the saying “Do Your Own Thing”? Most of us are guilty of not know ing what this really means. We have to con sider others (society) when exercising this thing. You are supposed to be your own keeper. Man’s ableness to govern him self has an obstacal wtiich is what society says is exceptionable. Does man live for society or for himslef? Many of you won't have any trouble answering this because the answer is visual. When you “Do Your Own Thing,” don’t worry about what society says, just remember it’s You and You’re doing what You desire. Man’s great est satisfaction comes from doing what he wants to do. Men’s government association WHAT’S HAPPENING? The Men’s Government Association of ECSU ex tends its heartiest wel come to the Freshman class of 1970. We hope that you will take an active part in our government. Men's Government, for those freshmen who don’t know, is a subsidiary of the Student Government Association as is Women’s Government. The officers for this year are: President - Ronald Harrison, Vice - Presi dent - Jimmy Copies, Secretary - Samuel King, Treasurer - Tommy Cox, Reporter - Walter Win- borne, and Parlia- mentarian-Larry Alston. It is hoped and antici pated that this year will be a year of progress and successful programs that will be geared toward the interests of the Stu dent Body. To the men students, we look forward to seeing you at the meet ing. To all new students and returning students, “Let us work, the task is at hand.” Walter Winbornc To Our Own Dr. Thorpe; Commonly referred to as “Pres” or the “Hat”. We at Elizabeth City State University are fortunate to have such a dynamic personality in our midst. Dr. Thorpe often sacri fices much of his personal time in attempts to better this institution. It is rare that you find a president of a State University like AKA news Members of Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, inc., commenced the 1970-71 academic year with members selected to various organizations. Basileus Shirley Bald win, senior Social Science major, was elected Pre sident of the Pan-Hellenic Council. Congratulations to Shirley and we wish you success in bringing unity among all Greek organi zations on this campus. Ella Parker, better known as “Sweet Mess”, will be inducted in Alpha Psi Omega, a Drama Fra ternity. Ella has been selected on the basis of points she has received while working with the Dramatics Club. She is presently the leading act ress in the organization. So you see she hasn’t been acting this way these three years for no reason at all. Congratulations “Sweet Mess’ . We would especially like to congratulate our advisor, Mrs. Carol C. Jones for being the teacher of the year for two consecutive years. This credit is dued to the votes of the student body. Members of the Ivy Leaf Club along with Car rie Graham, Patricia Mosely and Doris Lewis will participate in a fashionetta sponsored by the graduate chapter of the city, Zeta Kappa Omega. This is one of the acti vities which the under graduate chapter will work in conjunction with the graduate chapter in their annual presentation of Debutantes. We wish to extend a welcome to Freshmen, returning and transfer student. We add the grace Dr. Thorpe who not only works for the good of the school but is able to work with the students. I hope that Dr. Thorpe is only a spearhead of a new breed of black educators. I can’t help but believe that FCSU will become a great institution with Dr. Thorpe at the helm. Right On! ITEM: Frankfurters are con sidered the main product for using deboned poultry meat, but Pennsylvania State University and other research centers are analyzing chicken and turkey for use in such products as bologna, luncheon loaf, a “sloppy joe” mix, and meat patties of various types. Some pf the new products could feature 100 per cent de boned turkey and chicken.
