PAGE 4,..THE COMPASS..J^OVEMBER, 1970 Introducing Alpha Phi Help I Repas g iven at Bias Hall Bias Hall was the set ting of a lovely repast with Freshmen and their Supervisors Mrs. M.G. Lewis and Mrs. D. B. Newby as hostesses. Mr. W.C. Witherspoon, Director of Student Per sonnel and Mr. W.B. Spence, Associate Direc tor of Student Personnel were guest speakers. Mrs. Witherspoon praised the student’s for their behavior, their dress and for what he be lieved they would continue to do. Mr. Witherspoon fur ther stated that ideally, every woman who enrolls in college should have gained the experience and maturity of judgement to handle her own affairs in socially approved ways. Her ability to take The University Choir, under the direction of Miss Evelyn Johnson, has embarked upon a new year. The choir has al ready begun to prepare for a successful and en joyable year. There are now 80 mix ed voices in this year’s choir. Under the dynamic leadership of Charles Moore as president, the OLD HUNGRY ... It looks like something from a “mon ster movie”, but it is only a closeup of the Desert Locust, or grasshopper to Americans. He can eat his own weight in a day. A ton of them can eat as much in a day as 250 peo ple. You have become a mature person when keeping a se cret gives you more satis faction than passing it on.— Roland Doroff, Sauk Rapids (Minn.) Herald.. Delta dance and Lampodas Rush party The Deltas and Lam podas entertained fellow Vikings which brought ex citement to ECSU cam pus. Everyone had a won derful time dancing plus entertainment was given by the Lamps. The Lamps gave one of the best shows ever on this campus. The show consisted of the introduction of the Lamps followed by re citation of poems, the his tory of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The most exciting phase of the show was a series of mood steps and the serenade of many popular songs. The scholarship fund provided many needed voices in the Soprano and Bass scores. To the choirmembers- freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, we salute and we are back ing you one-hundred per cent Acquaintance affair The Women’s Govern ment Association spon sored a Getting To Know You Affair in the Uni versity Center. Jean Boyd, President of WGA presided the ses sion. The introduction of the guest speaker was by Rena Hackney, Vice-Pre- sident of WGA. Our Viking brother Clavin Nunnaly merely gave a brief talk on the important facts as the women’s lib eration plus other facts were expressed. Nun naly emphasized that stu dents should use their mouth to tell some of their grips to the head personnel instead of dis cussing them among themselves. The audience actively participated with some important gripes. They were: Why we have no meat for breakfast? The lack of furniture in some rooms. Of course, ladies hours. These are only a few in number of the many gripes that were stated in the session. Also very constructive things about the University were stated. A staff member of the University made a statement about the wo men students very respectable and well mannered mood of dress. After the Nunnaly pre sentation, the treasurer report was given by Ruby Kennedy. Many faculty and staff members attend ed this wonderful affair. Refreshments were served after the session was closed with the bene diction by Jean Body. Gamma Alpha Phi Gamma National Honorary Journalism Fraternity was founded December 11, 1919. Its principal pur poses are to give honor to those individuals who have made achievements in journalism and to help maintain and improve the quality of student publica tions. The general purposes of the fraternity are to give recognition and honor to individual abil ity and participation in student pii»lications in a college. The fraternity is coed. The Elizabeth City State University Chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma is the Delta Rho Chapter, which was established May 5, 1970 with active and Associate members. The active members of Alpha Phi Gamma are: Samuel King, President, John Spencer, Vice-Pre- sident, Geraldine Cox, Secretary, Ka-Esbia Phillips, Treasurer; Robert Ward, Bailiff, and Velmar Roundtree. Dr. Anne Henderson is an associate member. Mr. Leonard Ballou and Mr. Lawrence E. Sugg are the advisors. Active membership is open only to those eligible students who have leading positions in a college pub lication. Associate mem bership is open to heads of departments and faculty members and adminis trators who are actively involved in public rela tions or institutional pub lications. The Delta Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma is now an active organiza tion. Many activities are being planned that will promote greater recogni tion and strenghten publi cations at ECSU. 1. The Compass is rated yearly, presently our standings are 2nd place and 55 points away from 1st place. With all the dif ferent personalities there are on the campus of ECSU, next year our paper will rate 1st place. Notices will be posted informing time and place of meetings.
