I September, 1971 THE COMPASS Page Five QUESTION & ANSWER CORNER 5WELCOME TO THE NOW ADMINISTRATION As the whispering began, I be- ;an to listen, “Who is the Presi- Jent?”; “I don’t know?”, “I think its the old bald head man”, “Yeah ;hat’s nice and I wonder what he’s ike.” The whispering stopped as ;he president was introduced and :he freshman class waited patiently to see the face of the “hat”. As the roung man dashed to -the lecturn ind began to belt out welcome com- nents to the class of 1975, the addi tion waited breathlessly. It was lard to believe that this young, well- Jressed man was the president of lElizabeth City State University. As Ihe “hat” finished his welcome com- Inents, he was drowned with ap- :^lauses. Little did the freshman class know ibout our dynamic president and 3ur “now” administration. Many were unaware of the fact that Presi dent Thorpe is the youngest presi- ■ient in ECSU’s history and that ^SU’s administration is more dy namic, more relevant and more in- jiovative than ever before. Many ^idn’t realize that the tall hand some young man with the smiling 'et serious face was actually our (resident. Not only is he “with it”,i aware," “soulful,” and “dynamic,” ut he also loves his work, his ad- ninistration, the student body and he institution. The Thorpe admini-! Ration, aside from being a young- ^.ged administration is the most pro- jlressive yet to be realized, r There’s an old saying that what ne loves one works for. I can think f no more appropriate time than ow to apply this to the Thorpe dministration. It’s also true that a The University Choir is an organ the University that is frequently :alled upon. If you really want to [sing and if you really enjoy singing, ioin the Elizabeth City State Uni- i'ersity Choir. From popular tunes to down home black spirituals, the University choir has belted for days. If you really want to become a part af a together vocal organization - the university choir is definitely for you. The choir is under the direction of Professor of Music Evelyn A. John son; she is assisted by Mr. Wendell J. Wilson, and Mrs. R. Gragson, Assistant Professor of Music is the Accompanist. The choir consist of around 70 members. Outstanding in many aspects, the choir usually have a very busy schedule. Most performances include performing at vespers, convocations and assemblies. Another very significant fact is that the members of the choir come from |all departments. The choir gives many concerts during the year, most popular among these is the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. Concerts out side the Elizabeth City area are frequently given. The University choir highlights their year’s activities with an Annual Northern Tour ranging geographica- ly from New York to Washington, D. C, The tour is usually six days. The newest thing on the choir’s agenda are the plans for the Euro- Thorpe Delivers Address capable leader produces capable fol lowers, this is another example of our administration here at ECSU. Ever since the beginning of his administration. Dr. Thorpe has worked diligently for new innova tions in learning, curriculum revision and change, new curriculums (one recently approved — Pre-S o c i a 1 Work) and a totally new image for our University. It is true that a Un iversity should meet University standards and the Thorpe Admini stration has been meeting these standards. It’s not easy to describe a person that has done so much for an in stitution in such a short period of time. But it remains a fact that the liberal Thorpe administration is do ing a dynamic job of meeting the needs of the students, the faculty and staff, and yet its hard for some to acknowledge it. As a liberal- minded person I am in accord with the ideal of giving credit where credit is due. It is a hard core fact that a great deal of credit is due to the Thorpe administration. pean tour to be taken this spring. The tour will cover such countries as Holland, Germany, Italy and other countries. The University is indeed proud of this organization which has proven itself to be relevant to changing times and yet progressive. The Choir performed its Christmas Concert with the North Carolina Symphony These questions were asked by freshman students; the answers are furnished by the Editor. Q. Is it true that there is social and phy.sical hazing on campus? A. There is really no hazing per iod. In fact I hate the thought of hazing. At practically every insti tution of higher learning where new people come in annually there is some type of social initiation but this is far from hazing. Social hazing of any kind is basically psychologi cal and is intended to do no harm. It gives the upperclassmen a chance to boast about the number of hours they have and simply putting it mildly, have a little fun. There is no physical hazing connected at all. This has been a student tradition at ECSU. o—o Q. Do you feel it is necessary? A. As a student - Yes I do. I feel it helps the freshman student really become a part of the University fam ily. It’s all fun as long as there is no hand-laying. 0—0 Q. Why aren’t guys allowed in the girls dorms until after 4 P.M. A. Really I don’t know? In an age of co-education and co-ed dorms I think the policy is very othordox. There is no legitimate reason for it. o—o Q. Is it safe for a girl to walk around campus unaccompanied at night? A. I think it is if it’s not too late. What we often overlook is trust in one another. What you must re member is this is a University - not a Harlem street. Keep ECSU men cognizant of the fact that you DE MAND respect as a woman. I think its perfectly safe as long as it’s not too late. Our campus sometimes have late ponderers. Any woman that is out too late must have lost some thing. 0—0 Q. Is a student required to join Men or Women Government Associ ation? A. Normally all male students are members of Men’s Govenunent and all Women Women’s Government. There is a membership fee that is required. It is through these organi zations that men and women stu dents are able to register their gripes and “beefs.” o—o Q. Is there a policy on dress? A. There is a policy on dress for certain occasions such as vespers, convocations, concerts, lyceums and other after-six programs. There is also a policy on Simday dress. Stu dents are usually encouraged to im prove their appearance on Sundays. Junior Counselors are very helpful with dress policies and details. Feel free to consult them. o—o Q. Exactly what is the Freshman Talent Show? A. The freshman talent show is a program sponsored by the freshman class during the month of Septem ber. It is a part of your orientation program. All the participants are freshmen. An appointed committee sponsors try-outs and work with participants. o—o Q. Why are we (Freshmen Girls) so popular? A. First of all you are new at the University and the guys are especial ly anxious to see what you are like. You aren’t really that popular among other ECSU females. Your popular ity will last only a few months. Once you get adjusted you will be like everyone else. o—o Q. Where do I go if I have a sex problem? A. The personnel department have qualified counselors to help you with any problem you might have. Q. Who is Leon Thomas? A. Warren “Leon” Thomas is a junior from Virginia. He is on the football team and appears to be very controversial among the fresh man women. He is a handsome well-dres^d virile young man and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fra ternity. His picture appeared on page 89 in the University catalog. Look him up, he’s a true Viking. (See page six) formance with the Symphony recent years. The U niversity Choir has a scholarship fund that gives cash awards to persons desiring to join the choir with outstanding voices. The awards are competitive. The fund has provided many needed strong soprano and bass voices in tlie past year. University Choir Performs with the N. C. Symphony Orchestra —REW We Sang For Days,
