Virginia State Stops
Elizabeth City 20-14
Virginia State College
used a clutch fourth quar
ter goal line stand to
hold the Elizabeth City
State University just five
short yards of the goal
and register an opening
game 20 - 14 victory
Saturday. A fourth down
pass interception by Tony
Abrams in the end zone
kept the defending CIAA
champions from being up
set by the young and re
building Vildngs. This al
so was the first game for
Elizabeth City.
Early in the first period
senior quarterb a c k
Lawrence Harrell, un
protected all afternoon by
a green line, was hit hard
by Larry Brooks, 270
pound defensive tackle,
and Ernest Harris, 250
pound guard, fumbling as
he hit the turf. Ronald
Harris recovered for
Virginia State and they
had the first break of the
game. From the Vikings
24 yard line the Trojans
marched to the 18 where
the ECSU defense held.
Robert Davis booted the
Trojans into an early 3-0
lead.
Later in the period Vir
ginia State recovered
another Elizabeth City
fumble deepinViking ter-
ritoy, but were unable to
hit the scoreboard.
But later in the period
following a Viking punt
Virginia State marched 69
yards for the first touch
down of the afternoon.
Highlighting the drive was
the passing of former
Perquimans Union star
Joe Winslow. Ronald Bul
lock took the 30-yard
scoring aerial from Win
slow. With the PAT Vir
ginia State had a 10 - 0
advantage goir^ into the
second frame.
Elizabeth City came
roaring back, taking ad
vantage of a pass inter
ception by Aly Kahn John
son who returned it from
the 31 to the VSC 11, fin
ally made it to the goal
line. Rene Laughinghouse
went the final yard on a
burst up the middle. Har
rell hit Lindsey Riddick
for the two extra points
as Elizabeth City brief
ly closed the gap to 10-
8.
The Trojans also came
fighting back as they took
the kickoff and moved
from their own 31 to the
Elizabeth City 15. The
Viking defense held
though, and Davis toe put
three more points on the
board for VSC.
Elizabeth City got a
big break following the
second half kickoff as
Virginia State’s James
Morrison fumbled on the
first play from scrim
mage. Harrell wasted
little time as he found
Riddick with a 23 - yard
pass, and the fine sojAio-
more back shook tacWers
before crossing the goal
with the second Elizabeth
City touchdown of the af
ternoon. Harrell passed
for the two extra points
and Elizabeth City took
the lead 14 - 13.
The Trojans then
mounted a sustained 56
yard touchdown drive with
Morrison going the final
yard. Davis kicked the
extra point and Virginia
State once again had the
advantage 20 - 14; which
was the final score.
Elizabeth City appar
ently scored a safety near
the end of the third quar
ter, but an official’s rul
ing took the two points
away from the Vikings.
Virginia State did not
threaten again in the
game, but their defense
held the Vikings off the
final quarter to preserve
the victory.
Aside from the loss, the
Vikings lost the services
of quarterback Harrell
who was taken to a Pet
ersburg hospital for ob
servation following a leg
injury.
