Champion ECSU To Face Ten Grid Foes This year nearly ev eryone in the conference wants to take a crack at the 1971 CIAA grid champions or the proud title holder wants to give almost everyone a chance. Either way you look at it. Coach Tom Caldwell’s Vikings will face a long season ac cording to the 1972 foot ball schedule as released by Elizabeth City State University. With five con tests at home and five on the road, it will mark the first time that ECSU will play ten games dur ing the regular season. Except for the grid op ener against North Caro lina A. & T. State Uni versity (MEAC), ECSU’s major opposition will, come from all five of the CIAA’s Northern Division teams and four of the five Southern Division Con tenders, The Vikings-Ag- gies encounter, Sept ember 9, will mark the first time that an Eliza beth City eleven, even with A. & T. in the young series, .has ever played at Greensboro. If there be any conso lation for Coach Caldwell, who faces another major rebuilding year, it might be the fact that two of the three opponents who nipped the Vikings during the regular season, Vir ginia State College and Winston-Salem State Uni versity, must come to ECSU. Winston-Salem, who finally bowed to the Vikings in the CIAA’s championship contest, will be ECSU’s Annual Homecoming foe, on Oct ober 21.
