Reflections from Student to Instructor
The first question
which immediately
comes up from friends,
new acquaintances, and
associates is why did you
come? How could you
come back?
Quite honestly, the first
few times, 1 had to admit
that it was a very present
thought in my mind. Af
terwards, however, 1 con
cluded that no really spe
cial or particularly new
influence caused me to
return, but it was an im
portant old reason, at
least to me. 1 was, as a
student, a first-class cri
tic of the organization,
academics, and environ
ment of my University,
and, like many others, I
was attracted to these in
adequacies without much
thought as to the cause,
the effects, and needed
solutions. Elizabeth City
State University existed
for my needs and no re
ciprocity was needed, ex
pected, or given.
What happened? I sud
denly realized that
wherever 1 went ECSU
would go, for it had be
come as much a part of
me as I of it and we
represented each other.
For this reason 1 wanted
to be a good representa
tive and likewise I want
ed to be a representative
for an instutution which
merits representation to
a degree inferior to none-
not necessarily equal to
all - but INFERIOR TO
NONEII
A combination of
chance, circumstance,
and opportunity combin
ed to bring me back to
my alma mater and to my
Department of undergra
duate study. Chance, be-
cause a vacancy existed
and I was reachable; cir
cumstance becuase 1 was
ready for movement from
a soon-to-become rou
tine job; and opportunity
because of the demand
for experience and here
was the situation by which
to gain experience.
Am I happy? I made a
positive decision and look
for a fulfillment of many
objectives. Have 1 any
regrets? Many things
could be different, but
if so not necessarily bet
ter.
My hope is that Eliz
abeth City State Univer
sity and 1 can establish
that reciprocity so long
missing and meet our ob
ligations to each other,
being representatives of
each other with no doubt
of the merit of such re
presentation.
Thanks for the oppor
tunity. Let’s all work to
achieve the goals.

Elizabeth City State
University was one of the
universities having a
small representation.
Some universities had at
least ten to 15 represeii-
tatives. A and T State
University was one of the
universities to have 15
representatives.
ECSU’s
Foundation
Why should we give to
the Elizabeth City State
University Foundations?
First, we should give be
cause this is our family.
Second, we have pride and
love our university.
Third, we are state
assisted, and not state
supported. Fourth, it is
for our benefit. Fifth, the
money draws interest and
this helps to increase
the amount of money.
Sixth, the money is tax
deductible and seventh, we
as “Vikings” owe it to
our “Alma Mater.”
We hope all of you will
join and help us to reach
our goals that' have been
set for this year. Student
leaders are asked to
please relate the message
as much as possible.
Miss ECSU
ECSU Is...
I’ve heard a lot of Bro
thers and Sisters talking
about how untogether E-
lizabeth City State Uni
versity is, how jive EC
SU is, how un-for-real
ECSU is and how there
“ain’t” nothing to do
at ECSU. When I hear
this, I wonder if these
Brotiiers and Sisters ev
er really apply them
selves to conditions and
situations here at Eliza
beth City State Universi
ty or do they just stand
back checking everybody
else out and reach the
conclusion that they are
wlidt’s happeni^ and ev
eryone else is jiving. But
after all that is done, what
has been accomplished?
Maybe an inflated ego has
been acquired, but with
all your togetheritess
what have you done? Have
vou tried to get things
together at ECSU? Have
you ever really rapped
with your jive Brothers
and Sisters? As a mat
ter of fact, what do you
know about them or their
ideas? Have you attempt
ed to make things real or
relevant here or parti
cipated in the functions
that do exist? Or do you
just sit in the Union or
the dorm and complain
about what is, what ain’t
and what should be but
do nothing? It takes much
more of a man or woman
to activate change. Any
body can sit and rap a-
bout it.
If you are dissatisfied
with things on campus, do
something! Participate in
your class meetings;
come out to the Student
Government meetings;
get involved in your own
government. Attend func
tions on campus, make
suggestions, but don’t
just sit and complain. Re
member, we are Eliza
beth City State University
and if ECSU is jive, un
together, unreal and dull,
then Brothers and Sis
ters, we are responsible
and are equally as jive,
untogether, unreal and
dull.

MISS ECSU
