Page 6...THE COMPASS...December, 1972 Kool and The Gang Entertain at ECSU Black Music Togetherness I am Black; Black as I can be And I need to be heard I have a great contribu tion And being Black, I put it in song My song is Soul, a part of me This is Soul “You oughta Be With Me” is the title of the latest single released by A1 Green. A1 Green is currently the hottest Black vocalist to make the soul circuit in re cent years. Within the last years he has turned out nothing but million sel lers. He has a style which is smooth, and he croons with feeling that expres ses the type of love that Black men feel for their women. A1 Green sings from his heart; from his soul. A1 Green is Soul. Check out his latest LP release, “I’m Still in Love With You.” “Amazing Grace,” is the title given to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin’s million sel ling gospel album. Are tha has been known to stay at the top, but now she has once again out done herself. With the help of Rev. James Cle veland and his South ern California Commun ity Choir this album is sure to become a clas sic. This album is done soulfully and with a feel ing and an intimacy which has been needed in gos pel for a long time. Also pick up on A r e t h a’s .“Young, Gifted and Black’ album in which she displays her talents as a songwriter as well as a vocalist. “I’ve Got A Bag of My Own,” and a Bag it is when it comes to the King of Soul, James Brown. This is definitely another smash hit for Brown to add to his collection of more than 35 Gold re cords. Brown’s latest al bum, “Get on the Good Foot,” promises to as sure everyone that the King, James Brown, will be around for quite a while. Give a toast to Curis Mayfield for helping to prove that Black com posers can score movies in a way that brings out the entire movie. “Super fly” is an artistic mas terpiece that makes for superb listening right up to the last note. Cheers to Black Mo ses, Issac Hayes, for his very successful scoring of the television series, “The Men.”' "Theme from the Men,” is the first really soulful tele vision score. And “Shaft” which is Hayes’ greatest display of genius is still on the minds of music lovers everywhere. Speaking of musical scoring for movies, word is all over the country that Marvin Gaye has done some superb work for the movie “Trouble Man.” Donny Hathaway is also into musical scoring with the aid of scoring veteran Quincy Jones. Hathaway did a very interesting and entertaining score for the move “Come Back Char leston Blue.” And by the way, check out the “Ro berta Flack and Donny Hathaway” album if real smooth soul is your th ing. The Jackson Five, who recently ended a Tour of England which included playing for the Queen arc still the Baddest group of Brothers around. Their latest single “Gotta Find My Corner” is the result of their inborn profes sionalism, as are the long line of gold and platinum records they released o- ver the past three years. Among recent develop ments within the group are the launching of Jer maine and Michael as solo artists. Michael sang the musical score for the mo vie, “Ben!” Still high in the realm of Black entertainers are the Supremes, and Four Tops. Black entertainers are just doing their thing all over the place. The Temptations are still go ing strong with their re lease “Papa Was a Rol ling Stone.” The Stylis tics with their unique sty le of singing are still in the top with “I’m Stone in Love With You.” The Chi-Lites are turning out songs worthy of being concert pieces, and the list goes on and on. A- mong new artists Billy Paul and his single "Me and Mrs. Jones” and the Temprees are outstan ding. And let’s not forget Bill Withers who has been in the limelight for over a year. Those mentioned arc only a few of the artists, old and new, who are still contributing to the Black man’s universally under stood medium. His music. It all started when Black people found that a simple song can do so much for a weary soul. Soul is composed of emotions and needs ex pressed through music, or in every thing we do. Black is Soul Soul is a part of me This is Black Music This is Soul Elisha liurke We, the Black people of this campus talk of being “together.” What is togetherness? Does it mean that if I have dif ferent morals than you. I’m square and do not deseirve to be treated as a human being? Does it mean that some people should be treated super ior than others? That some of them should be looked down upon? Or that some should be treated as scum? And this is what we call togetherness? Somewhere along the line of togetherness, some of us lost the meaning of it or if we know the mean ing, we fail to practice what we know. Yet, we are together. “Togetherness” is more than Black Power. It is more than soul. It is more than many of you will ever know. Just be cause you choose to wear your hair in an Afro and wear African costumes does not mean that you are “together.” In other words, appear ances are deceiving and if you are not “together” on the inside, you are nothing more than a hypocrite. So sisters and brothers, let’s not try to fool each other with false identi ties and calling these hypocritical deeds “to getherness.” Alean Anderton Miss ECSU It’s Time for Santa Claus!!
