To round up his many attributes during his presence as a Viking, “Larry” proudly represented us in the World University Games, at Moscow this summer. Mr, Horton’s performance, during the world University Games, was most commend able, having had to wrestle against the three time world champion from Romaina in the first bout and against the Russian wrestler in the second. But our mighty Grem did manage to win a sixth place medal in the Greco-Roman bout. This victory, although sixth place, was a real triumph for him because it was his first venture into the field ol Greco-Roman style wrestling. The necessary skills of that technique were persued by Mr. Horton at Purdue and Minnes- sota University Clinics. There at the universities, after becoming aware of what was to come he began rigorous and systematic training under coaches Ron Finley and Bob Hartmen. Many momentous events let up to this challenge for the Gremlin. His first experience in wrestling was at his high school. West Carteret in Morehead City. He went on to master the techniques of free-style wrestling and won the state championship in 1968, In 1972 he captured the ClAA crown in his weight category. He has participated in and won in five different North Carolina tournaments which lead him to the Southern Open at Chattanooga, Tenn. Al though he did not come out on top Neil Turner, coach of Athletes in America expressed an interest in having him wrestle for them after gradua tion. To sum it all up in the words of Mr, Horton “it was rough”, but it is obvious that determi nation is a vital asset to any individual. ^Homecoming All Home Games Played at Memorial Field MR. HORTON IS PROUD of his medal. Dr. Thorpe and Coach Little congratulate him.
