PAGE 4...THE COMPASS...DECEMBER, 1974 Power Displayed By Vikings The pre-season talk around the Elizabeth City State University campus was that Thomas Blue really came to play basketball. The former all-star eager of Wilson, impressed Coach Bobby Vau ghan with his quickness, earning a starting berth at center, as the Vikings opened their basketball season, Satur day night, in Williams Hall gymnasium. But, the truth is all of the 10 freshmen players came to Elizabeth City to play basket ball, to prove that they really wanted to be Vikings. Working his talented young recruits into the lineup, Coach Vaughan watched the Vikings build up a 21-point halftime margin, en- route to a surprising 120-88 CIAA victory over a veteran Livingstone College quintet. Sixty eight of the total points were produced by the young Viking recruits, making it almost impossible for the visitors to adjust to the Vaughan shuttle system. The agility of Blue reminded Viking supporters of Israel ‘'Cisco” Oliver, the jumping jack who led ECSU to the CIAA tournament championship, the NAIA-District 29 championship and a fourth place finish in the NAIA National Tournament, in 1969. The 6-6 pivot man led with 22 points, followed by 10 points each from freshmen Martin Towe and Robert Powell, in the opener. But, perhaps more than anything else, it was the play of senior captain Charles Carr that inspired the Vikings to victory. Seeing his team trailing, 6-2 at 18:15 of the first half, the ball-stealing, fast-breaking and driving guard ripped open the Living stone defense for 15 of his 23 points in the first half. As the 6-3 guard opened the second half scoring, followed by baskets by Towe and Powell, ECSU continued to zoom ahead, leading 72-51 at 17:01 of the final period. Seeing four of his players, Solomon Redman, Jerry Hamil ton, Leonard Mapp and Joseph Palmer score in double figures, first-year Coach Willie Porter got some consolation. Following away games at Hampton Institute Dec. 7 and North Carolina Central Univer sity Dec. 12 the young Vikings will return to ECSU for the final game before the Christmas break, meeting St. Paul’s College Dec. 14. WGA Activities The projects for th6academic year of 1974 for Women’s •Government entailed two major projects. Those projects were the Annual Children’s Christ mas Party and a Community Tea. The children’s Christmas Party was held December 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the Recreation Room of Bias Hall. The party involved twenty under-privi- ledged children between the ages of three and six. The children were entertained by movies, several games and the presence of a Viking Santa Claus. The WGA also provided gifts for each child.
