PAGE 4 THE COMPASS February, 1976 Cornels Streaked By Vikings By Mrivin Norman Hie Viking’s basketball team lost its second home game ftw the 75-76 season, niis time it was to the Camds of Campbdl CoU^e. In the early stages of the game, the lead switched hamls often. Martin Towe and comrade Thomas Blue added qiice to the game Mocking dwts and raging the Camel’s defense. Wth 4:31 left in the first half, the Vikings had built us a seven point lead. However Staggers and Wells cut tiie Viking lead down to 3 points going into the half. At 18:55 in the second half, neither team seemed to score. They had the opportunity but failed by missing close shots. The Vikings got on the board with Towe and Jones hitting when everything seemed lost. With the crowd shouting defense! defense! the Vikings moved to a 66-65 lead at 9:00 in the game. The Camels behind Sanford and Yale built up a 73-68 lead with 6:07 left in the second half. Hudson of ECSU sparkled the offoise by helping to tie the game twice more. But Campbell scored again. The Vikings with 16 seconds left had a chance to tie the game but hdd the ball until the final seconds and missed the attempted shot and lost the NAIA game 85-87. Congratulations To Football Team By Melvin Norman TTie Compass Staff would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Viking’s FOOTBALL TEAM for their fine performance during the 1975-1976 school year. The football team however did not succeed in reaching first place but came in fourth with a 5-3 record in CIAA standing and 5-4 overall. The Co;)aptains of the team were seniors: Jerome Newsome, ^chard Mahan, Wallace Shields, Patrick Jennings, Gre^ry Turner, Lonnie Walton, and Kenneth Barrett. Alfred Holmes and Jerome Newsome were the only Vikings who made ^ CIAA while Newsome, Mahan, Curtis Lewis, and Shields boasted the squad on the all NAIA selections. In the CIAA Jerome Newsome placed fourth among the running backs in rushing. In seven games Newsome rushed an average of 118 yards. Fk«dunan Jtriumie Williams was first among quarterbacks in tiie CIAA. Williams tossed 12 touchdowns for a 10.12 conqdetioQS per game. Another Freshman Michael Hill was placed second among running backs with seven touchdowns with a 4.44 catche* per game in the CIAA. Alfred Ifolmes a junior wu second amcmg tlie puirters in the CIAA. Ifolmes punted 55 times for 2,513 yards with a 45.7 average. Once again we congratulate both the offense and defensive (teams for their outstanding performance for the year and we hope that by next season you all will once again bring the championship back to ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY. lody ViklRgs Win By Faye Smith Hie Lady Vikings drove the Lady Bears of Shaw University on down the road as they won the best 2 out of 3 games during the volleyball game played here in October. Being coached by Mrs. Bembry, continuing practice was the key behind the strategy used to outwit the Lady ^ars. Members of the team will be included in the next Compass. Sopjiomores Star In CIAA By Melvin Norman Thomas Blue and Martin Towe, sophomores at Elizabeth City State University leads the CIAA in two events for the month of December. Blue, going into the Christmas holidays, is the leading rebounder in the CIAA with 78 rebounds. He averages 22.2 points a game and has a field goal percaitage of .621. Towe is the CIAA field goal percentage leader with a .705 average. Out of 51 shots he made 36 shots. Blue also was named CIAA player of the weds, when he had two outstanding ni^ts against North Carolina Central University and Jackson State College.
