The first game, a heart-breaker, ECSU lost to Delaware State, by a score of 9-7. The Vikings led 7- 3 going into the fourth quarter. Late in the per iod quarterback Johnnie Williams threw an in terception. Deleware then drove down field for the winning score on a 80 yard TD from Williams to Sopho more, Mike Hill. The Vikings then traveled to North Carolina Central. The first quarter proved to be a test, as both teams tried to find the others weakness. N.C.C. found the Vikings weakness as they opened up a powerful counter-play. The play worked for gains of 43, 15, 12, 23, 75, 44, 14 and 15 yards. The 75, 44, and 43 yard plays went for T.D.’s. In the meantime the Vikings could not find their offense, as time and time again the Vik ings were forced to punt. A big difference in the offense was that Greg Sturdivant was injured in the DSC game and did not play. Mke Hill was ejected on the second play of the game and several other Vikings were injuried. The final score of the game w'as N.C.C. 34 and ECSU 0. The wary Vikings then returned home for their first home game. The Virginia State Trojans shocked the* Vikings on the first play of the game. V.S.C. quarterback, Ernie Banks, threw a 60 yard pass to Wayne Fawell. Fortunately, Fawell dropped the ball on the Viking goal line where the Vikings recovered the ball. However, the Vikings luck ran out as Banks continued to throw to a host of Trojan receivers. The Vikings did show some of fense as Jeff Jones caught two touchdown passes, one from Johnnie Williams and the other from freshman Jeff Postell. The final score of the game was 40-20. Although the Vikings are winless several Vikings have played well. On defense, James Harrel, Douglas Almond, Richard and Kevin Grayson, and freshman Fred Wilson have played well. On offense Donnell Mclntre, Jeff Jones, Fredie Lewis and Fred Hargrove have played well. Punter Alfred Holmes con tinues to be among the leaders in the nation and is being hounded by pro-scouts. Shown in upper left photo, quarterback, Johnnie Williams (11) handing off to halfback, Darrell Rodgers (20). This action took place at Northeastern, against Virginia Union. In the center photo, Alfred Homes, one of the best punters in the CIAA, averaging 37,4 yards a punt is getting ready to send another one flying through the air.
