Basketball
Season Begins
By Thomas Graves
The Elizabeth City State
University basketball team is
looking forward to a big
season. With all five starters
returning along with most of
the bench from last season,
the Vikings should be a
devastating force in the
C.l.A.A. Led by All
American, Thomas Blue, The
Vikings will open their season
in a new gym.
The Big plus for the Vikings
this season will be depth and
experience. As forwards, the
Vikings will have Martin
Towe and Jeff Jones. Towe is
a two-year starter, while Jeff
stepped in at mid-season last
year and did a fantastic job.
The Vikings can also depend
on Juan “The Swann”
Johnson to come off the bench
and given the Vikings a boost.
'Hie guards seem to be in
tact. Robert Powell and Doug
Hudson, both starters last
season, will handle the task of
moving the ball for the
Vikings. The Vikings can also
rely on a good recruiting
year. Freshmen prospects
will contribute to the Viking
team.
The C.l.A.A. will be tougher
than ever. J. C. Smith has
improved 100 per cent with
the addition of transfer
students and Blue Chip fresh
men recruits. J. C. Smith
should prove to be a strong
contender. Norfolk State,
hurt by the graduation of
Eugene Cunningham, will
still be a tough competitor.
Look for the race at the top to
be between Elizabeth City,
Virginia State, Norfolk State
and J. C. Smith.

Big Leon And Little Mike
Big Leon and little Mike Spinks?
Qimbed up the boxing ramp,
The light heavyweight and middleweight—
’76 Olympic Boxing Champs!
Leon’s in the Marine Corps;
Mike’s a civilian—
They gained worldwide recognition
That thrUled the hearts of millions.
They fought each round with vigorousness
Under Canadian blue skies indoors;
Received congratulatory telegrams
From President Gerald Ford.
Their mother—Oh, how joyfully;
Seemed to be so glad.
Her sons excelled exceedingly
In the Twenty-First Olympiad.
Their hometown of Saint Louis;
Gave them a warm-welcome bright,
But Leon was given many more
Of much to his delight.
Camp Lejeune and the City of Jacksonville;
Honored Leon with fine plaques.
As he accepted them graciously
And stood tall as a statue!
Leon signed his autograph
On everything that could be seen;
Bits of paper - dollar bills
And even the “Sports Illustrated Magazine!”
(Jold medals they both won;
And made world history, too—
The first time at the Olympic Games
For any brothers to do!

ECSU Christmas
T’was the night of the Christmas Party
Just listen to the band
The excitement was flowing
As the festivities began.
All the arrangements were made
For the Vikings with care
With special seats for VIP’s
And all who were there.
The reindeer were dancing
To the sound of the yule
While St. Nick himself
Took a dip in the pool.
The evening was fiUed
With such fun and good cheer
That the Chancellor cried out
“Merry Christmas to all - hope to see
You next year”.
