Townes, Chairperson of the Physical Sciences Department, related that he was very pleased with the appointment of Mr. Larry Thompson to the Physical Sciences Department. “We are most forunate in being able to reduce the student ratio per instructor in areas of physical science and physics; while bringing to ECSU a person who has completed undergraduate requirements, with distinc tion in Physics and has taught in several institutions of higher learning before coming here” Dr. Townes remarked. Prior to accepting the position at ECSU, Mr. Thompson had served as an instructor at Winston-Salem State University (1976-77), an instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University (1970-71), Pulaski County High School (1974-75), and spent his last two summers as spent a summer at Columbia University. Awarded the B.A. degree with honors by Virginia State College, and the Masters degree by Howard Univer sity, Mr. Thompson is now working toward the Ph.D., at Howard University. The Virginia-born Professor says “I’m here to help studepts. I may have some information useful in helping someone achieve their goal.” Upon • arriving here, I was very impressed with my acceptance by the Students of ECSU, after the semester had begun. This impression has motivated me to press forward with progress.” Mr. Thompson plans to become a specialist in the Scientific Application of Computers and work in research laboratories and to teach part-time. Above she is shown in the process of completing her research work. Marketing Competition Slated Carson New Business Dept Head By Cleveland BuUuck , Dr. John H. Carson has recently been appointed Chairman of the Department of Business and Economics at Elizabeth City State University. The department was previously headed by Dr. Marcus Ingram. Dr. Carson received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Georgia and his Phd. from Louisiana State University. He has worked here at Elizabeth City State University for five years and has helped to establish the present Business Curriculum, which he believes is “good and sound.” “Additional changes will be made in the future,” states Dr. Carson. He also stated that, “the Business Depart ment could be greatly im proved if there were more funds available to help upgrade the department.” Phihp Morris Incorporated" has announced its ninth annual Marketing- Communications Competition for College Students. The purpose of the competion is to provide students with a practical and realistic business project, bringing them into direct contact with the business community. A $1,000 grant will be awarded to the winning en tries at both the un dergraduate and graduate level; runners up will recieve $500 grants* and other finalists in the undergraduate and graduate categories will receive special merit awards. Entries may deal with any aspect of the broad areas of marketing - communications related to Philip Morris In corporated, its operating companies or any of its non tobacco products. Student chapters of professional socieities, regular classes or ad hoc committees of no less than five students at the un dergraduate level and no less than two at the graduate level under the counsel of full time faculty members may submit proposals. A distinguished committee of marketing- communications experts will judge selected entries. They are: Eugene H. Kummel, chairman of the board, McCann Erickson; Mary Wells Lawrence, chairman of the board. Wells, Rich, Greene; Arjay Miller, dean, Stanford University Graduate School of Business; William Ruder, president, Ruder & Finn; and James C. Bowling, senior vice president, Philip Morris Incorporated. In addition to the grants, two student representatives and the faculty advisor from each of the winning and runner-up committees will be invited to be Philip Morris’s guests at corporate headquarters in New York or at another corporate location to discuss their proposals with Philip Morris executives. The organization’s goals are to combine religious faiths of all types on the campus, to promote religions outreach, and to grow individually from these encounters. The annual Induction Service was held September 19, 1977, with the Rev. Maurice Pierre as the Keynote speaker.
