Vikings Lose First Two Grid Contests Page 7 Health Career Club Meets By Roberta Brown By Thomas Graves Sports Editor The Elizabeth City State University Vikings football team lost its’ first two games of the season. The Vikings lost their opening game to N.C. Central University a score of 13-6. They then traveled to Virginia State, where the Trojans pounde(i the Vikings 31-12. In the Central game, the Vikings looked very tough. Jonnie Williams fired a second quarter touchdown pass to Mike “Zeke” Hill to put the Vikings ahead, 6-0. With the awesome Viking defense, led by Tony Thompson, Ronnie Jones, Lawert Adams, and Anthony Whitehurst, the score remained 6-0 at Half-time. North Carolina Central received a lucky break, in the third quarter with the score still 6-0, the referee bumped into Viking quarterback Charlie Hadenty, knocking the ball loose. North Carolina Central recovered and later scored what proved to be the winning touchdown, and later scored again with eight seconds left in the game. In the Virginia State Game the Vikings blew the game from the opening kick-off. Trojan Runningback Rufus Crawford ran the opening kickoff back 87 yards for a Touchdawn. A few minutes later the Trojans scored again on a pass interception making the score 12-0. Then Fred Wilson blocked a Virginia State punt and ran 67 yards for the only Viking Touchdown of the first half. With the game getting out’ of hands, a fight broke out in the last minutes of the game. Several Vikings including quarterback Johnnie Williams received injuries in the long 15 minutes encounter with Virginia State fans and players. After the fight the Vikings lost their spirit and the game. Final Score Trojans, 31; Vikings 12. Fred Hargrove caught 7 passes for 114 yards and proved to be the leading Viking offensive player for the day. Business Club News By Katherine Overton On Thursday, September 22, 1977, the Department of Business and Economics Club met briefly for the purpose of nominating officers for the 1977-78 academic year. Elections were held on Tuesday, September 27th and the following officers were elected: President Katherine Overton; Secretary - Isabelle Purvis; Treasurer - Percy Foxwell, Jr.; with a run-off election to be held for the office of Vice President. ■ Two days after the election ^ a meeting was held at the University Center for the purpose of installing the new officers as well as conducting the run-off election for the Vice Presidency. As a result of that election. Miss Pamela Holley joined the other of ficers in assuming their of ficial duties. Mr. Hanif Hafiz, faculty advisor, introduced the new members of the Department and welcomed them on behalf of the students and faculty. They are; Dr. Saeed Nizami - Assoc. Professor of Business; Dr. William Lane - Asst. Professor of Business; Mrs. Brenda McLean - Lecturer; and Dr. John Carson who is our new Chairman of the Department , of Business and Economics. Dr. Carson of ficially installed the new officers for the year. The Business Club is looking forward to a very productive year and we invite all interested business majors and members of the faculty to join us in making this year a most successful one. Sports Briefs Senior Line Backer, Lester Farrington, has started off on a good season, He has made 41 tackles in the first three games, including “25” ‘in dividual tackles. Farrington is a 6’1”, 215 pound native of Red Springs, N.C. —O— Senior Tight End, Fred Hargrove, after the first two games is the leading receiver. He has hauled in “10” catches for 165 yards. Hargrove is a 6’6”, 215-ound Suffolk, Vkginia native. Have fun while attending Viking Land, but don’t forget to stress high academic achieveipent. Support your school whenever possible. The Health Careers Club of 1977-78 held its first meeting on Sept. 7, 1977 at 7 o’clock at the University Health Center. Beneficial factors to the growth of the club are its Motto and Theme: Motto: “To live is to ser ve”. Theme: “To build a better career among this years Health Careers.” Officers are as follows: President, Wulmon Lee, Jr.; Vice-President, Martha Coston; Secretary, Brenda Coffield; Ass. I^c., Dora Liverman; Treasurer, Sandra Mitchell; Ass. Behind the South in the hiring outlook is the Midwest where 31 per cent of those surveyed expect an increased pace. The hiring pace remains strong for Durable Goods Manufactureres with 34 per cent, the same as in the June Manpower survey, expecting to increase their employment levels during the next three months. Similar to the dip it registered in the Manpower survey one year ago, 29 per cent of the Nondurable Goods Manufacturers interviewed say they will hire more workers with nine per cent calling staff reductions. Three different industry sectors dipped noticeably in Boneser. The purpose of this organization is to provide collectively, and additionally quality preparation to better fulfill the obligations and requirements for health careiers. Projects, field trips, films, guests spesdters, and assemblies are among the preparatory methods that are desperately needed in the community. Various Com mittees of the organization are the program, project, field trip and publicity committees. The club is built with a lot of dedication and determination to extend a helping^hand to the people on campus and throughout our surrounding communities. Trends the survey—Public Ad ministration, Services and Construction. The quarterly Emplyment Outlook Survey is conducted as a public service by Manpower, Inc. The survey is designed and administrated by Manpower’s International Resear^ Deparment. which uses a statistically representative sample of approximately 5,000 large employers, distributed among 10 industry sectors and some 150 U.S. cities. The survey results reflect the employiuent intentions for the next 90 days. Manpower, Inc., is one of the largest employers in the world with an annual work force of mote than 500,000 individuals. The firm has more than 700 offices in 33 countries. An unconfirmed report to the U.S. Weather Bureau states that on July 16, 1949 a freak heatwave in Portugal brought the temperature up to 158°F. for two minutes. Robert C.
