Page i December 1977 Math And Science News By Anthony Rahming “A New Beginning” Eaeh year the Mathematics and Science Departments get together in a joint effort and try to enhance the motivation of the students within these departments. They hope to achieve this motivation through the formation of the Mathematics and Science Club. The club has met only once thus far this year, the main purpose being the election of new officers for the 1977-78 academic year. They are: Pres.: Anthony Rahming, Jr. - Chemistry Major; V. Pres.: Sylvia Freeman, Jr. - Mathematics Major; Sec.: Wanda Bullock, Jr. Mathematics Major; Tres.: Wallace Richmond, Jr. - Biology Major; Rep.: Phyllis Howell, Jr. - Mathematics Major; Miss Math Science: Eva Riggins, Jr. Mathematics Major; and Adv.: Dr. Louise N. Sutton. The only requirement for membership is to be an in terested mathematics or science major who wishes to participate in the club’s various activities. Some of the tentative plans for the club are: sponsor seminars, lectures, projects, trips, community affairs and various other group ac tivities. The club will also try to help the students in a professional capacity, by letting them know of job opportunities that are available and the means by which one can make the best of these opportunities. New members are welcome. If there are persons interested in joining the club, please attend the meetings on the dates designated below. The club will meet on the third Monday of each month at 8:30 P.M. on the first floor of Lester Hall. Please attend. Support your departments and enjoy yourselves. Kappa Delta Pi News By Carmen Batten On October 16, 1977 Kappa Delta Chapter of Kappa Ddta Pi, an honor society in education, officially initiated five new members. The following persons were granted membership: Wanda R. Bullock-Mathematics, Dorenda K. Bryant- Intermediate Education, Sylvia Freeman- Mathematics, Harriet Bynum-English Education, and Denese Jones-Early Childhood. To become a member of Kappa Delta Pi, students must be in teaching education and have obtained high scholastic achievement. Students also have to com plete a project which consists of doing a bulletin board and submitting a term paper. Some of the following topics were presented by the newly elected members, WHERE IS THE MONEY TO COME FROM by Wanda Bullock, MAINSTREAMING: The LATEST EDUCATIONAL TREND by Dorenda Bryant, EDUCATION: YESTER DAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW by Sylvia Freeman, STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATION CONCERNING EDUCATION FOR THE NEGRO by Harriett Bynum, NATIONAL TEACHERS EXAMINATION by Denese Jones. After the initiation ceremonies, the members had dinner at the Holiday Inn. The members who presided over the initiation were as follows: President — Anton Wesley, Vice President — Gloria Banks, Secretary — Carmen Batten, Treasurer — Delores Jones, Mrs. Beatrice Scott-alumni member presently teaching at Central Elementary and also Dr. Edna Davis, Chapter Counselor. Miss Price Rides The Float By Isabelle Purvis The members of the Business and Economic Clubs selected Miss Angelena Price as Miss Business and Economic Clubs. She was escorted by her brother, Robert Price during the Coronation Ball. Miss Business and Economic Club rode the float. Humanity, in the Homecoming Parade. Misses Spencer, Ware and George New Librarians Join Staff There she was escorted by, Harvey Battle. The Business and Economic Club hope to reactivate their chapter and to become affiliated with Phi Beta Lambda. Any interested persons in the Business Department, who would like to become a member of the Business and Economic Clubs, please submit your name to any of the officers. By Carolyn Britton With the new addition to the library, this year there are three more new additions that everyone might not know of yet. They are the three new librarians, who have not only been added to the staff to provide help as well as charm, but also to provide us with the usefulness and ex perience they have acquired through there background. Now to introduce them to you and tell you a little about them and the position they hold in the library. They are as follows: Miss Charlie B. Spencer, who is a native of Lilesville, N.C., is a graduate of Bowman Senior High. She entered N.C. Central University in 1970, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and in 1977 she received her Masters in Library Sciences Degree. Miss Spencer is a former worker of the American Bankers Association. Her present position on the library staiff is a librarian in the reference department. When asked her opinion of the school and the students? She said, “the people and students are friendly and the institution has the potential to turn out some excellent scholars. Miss Rebecca H. Ware, originally from Anthers, Georgia. Miss Ware is a graduate of Shaw University, Raleigh N.C. There she received a B.S. degree in English. She later received her Masters degree from the University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After this she came to work at E.C.S.U. as a reading specialist with the dual program. She then went to Morgan State where she worked as a periodical librarian. Miss Ware is also a member of the American Li braries Association. She now works (Ml the library staff as head of the periodical departmait. Her comment of the school and people was “Its ad vancing and with some im provement the school could be one of the greatest universities there is, the people are very friendly.” Miss Christine G. Geroge is from Lewiston, N.C. She did her undergraduate study at N.C.C.U. She received a B.A. degree and later a M.L.S. degree. She began work in 1966 as a school librarian and media specialist in several different schools. Miss George present position in the library is periodical librarian.
